Weighing In with Nathan Exelby

Well known QLD media man NATHAN EXELBY is a constant at the track in the ‘sunshine state’ and has a full wrap of last weekend’s action, plus the horses to follow and tragedies beaten.

MALOOLABA CUP DAY

IT was Mooloolaba Cup Day in name, but really, it was all about the Swiss Ace Plate and ZOUSTYLE announced his return to racing by lowering the Corbould Park 1000m record. He’s now unbeaten in eight Queensland runs and trainer Tony Gollan suggests he’s as sound as he’s ever been.

The George Moore could be next, but there’s also the potential to earn a Magic Millions wildcard later in the Brisbane leg of the carnival.

If he holds together, he could dominate the summer short course events.

TOP 3 TO FOLLOW

DEEP TEMPEST: Only having start number three, got back along the inside and kept coming all the way up the running. By OCEAN PARK and has scope to get over further yet. Promising three-year-old.

INASEC: Had to race three and four deep facing the breeze throughout from the wide gate. Did a big job to still be punching away at the end.

SO YOU WIN: Goes to the middle distance now after two runs back. Found the line well enough without ever threatening.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME

STELLAR MAGIC: Snagged back to get in and on a day where the on-pacers were hard to catch, her chances were always problematic from that point. Changed course in the straight and really charged at the end. She’s going super.

SIR WARWICK: Had pressure inside and outside and just didn’t finish off the last 200m. Suspect he’s had enough this time in after winning four straight. He will measure up to these when he comes back.

ROMAN AUREUS: He travelled in a nice position but couldn’t build any momentum when stuck behind DUSTY TYCOON and Sir Warwick until halfway up the running. Didn’t have the sprint of the 1-2 pair but finished off nicely.

RIDE OF THE DAY

BEN Thompson, GEE TEE TEE, Race 9: Eased out of the speed battle, but was able to stay just close enough and then had the big fellow balanced up and ready to make his challenge at the right time.

THE BIG WINNER

THE Gillian Heinrich-trained ROSE OF SHIRAZ ($26) had most punters starting the day on the back foot when she upset a couple of well-spruiked debutants, lasting by a narrow margin in the first.

COCO ROX for Matty Dunn was the other big-priced winner on the card, saluting at $26 in a race where several others were backed to win in a wide open betting affair.

THE BIG ‘GOES’

INVINOVICH, Race 1: Opened double figures Wednesday, started $3.60 at the jump.
ZOUSTYLE Race 7: Just kept firming all week. Generously priced at $3+ early, eventually jumped $2.05.

RACING TRIVIA

1 WHO rode Swiss Ace to win the 2009 Oakleigh Plate?
2 WHO held the Caloundra 1000m record before Zoustyle lowered it on Saturday?

FROM THE STEWARDS ROOM

HONEY POT reared just before the start was affected and lost considerable ground. Trainer Tony Gollan had no issue with her being declared a runner and now needs to secure another barrier certificate.

The run was no doubt very good, given how close she was able to get at the end and she firmed to $15 for the Magic Millions. Is she a ‘Millions’ contender? No doubt she’s going to win races, but I wouldn’t be rushing to back her in that race based on what we saw on the weekend.

WALKING THE TRACK

UPGRADED to a Good 3 early in the day, Zoustyle was able to break a track record, so it was slick going, but trainers were happy with the surface. With the track running fast, on speed runners dominated for much of the day.

WHETTING THE APPETITE

THE HARROVIAN has recovered from the blood count setback that ruled him out of the Keith Noud last week. He will be the headline act when metropolitan racing heads to the Gold Coast on Saturday, as he resumes in the Recognition Stakes.
