RACE 1 – TAB Handicap 1300m

Lugarno – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

Agenda Setter – J Parr reported he had no specific instructions to lead, however, the horse, which was wearing blinkers for the first time, jumped extremely well and travelled strongly to assume the lead in the early stages.  He added that Agenda Setter then tended to race keenly in the lead. Over the final 200m laid in when giving ground and brushed the running rail near the 50m.

Deconstruction – approaching the 200m was inconvenienced by Iceman which shifted out.

El Castello – began awkwardly.

Froebel Star – trainer Mr C Maher was fined $200 under LR35(2) for the late declaration of J McDonald as the rider of the filly.

Squeezebox – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  Raced keenly in the early stages.  When making ground passing the 150m had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Lugarno and Tenbury Wells which shifted out when racing greenly.   Squeezebox remained held up and was not able to to be fully tested for the remainder of the event.

Benamera – Stewards permitted the late withdrawal of the colt at 8.51am.  Trainer Mr S O’Halloran was fined $300 under LR36(2) for failing to withdraw the horse by the scratching deadline.

Canara – began awkwardly and was slow to begin.  From a wide barrier was then shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Bearings – as App D Gibbons’ arrival onto course was delayed due to transport difficulties, Stewards permitted J Ford to be substituted as the rider of the filly.  From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Tuileries – commencing to make the turn near the 600m got its head up and shifted out.   Approaching the 200m was inconvenienced when Deconstruction shifted out in advance of it.  T Schiller reported that the filly sweated up behind the barriers.  He said that he was asked to ride the filly where it was comfortable anticipating this would be near midfield.  He said that after settling behind midfield, Tuileries closed off well although it tended to race greenly when placed under full pressure.

Zielle – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Tenbury Wells – raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.

Iceman – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.  Approaching the 200m shifted out, made contact with Deconstruction and became unbalanced. When unbalanced, then shifted in and had to be steadied away from the heels of Lugarno which shifted out.

RACE 2 – Schweppes Handicap 1600m

Union Gap – when questioned App D Gibbons stated his intention was to lead, however when the rider of Leica Storm showed intent to lead, he was content to sit off that horse.  He said Union Gap travelled only fairly through the race and then came under heavy pressure prior to straightening in order to maintain its position.  He added that Union Gap subsequently gave no response to his riding in the home straight and commenced to give ground.  He said when the horse's action shortened noticeably after the 200m, he did not ride it out over the concluding stages.  App Gibbons said that in his view Union Gap may be better suited on a rain affected surface.  A post race veterinary examination revealed Union Gap to be lame (1/5) in the off foreleg.  Stable representative Mr J Gerard-Dubord was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to Union Gap being permitted to barrier trial or race again.

Mr Buster – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

RACE 3 – Drinkwise Plate 1300m

Chilly Charlie – when questioned regarding his riding in the home straight, J Collett stated that in accordance with his instructions, he rode the gelding, which was resuming today, from a rearward position from a wide barrier.  He said after straightening and placing the horse under pressure, he identified a run closer to the inside and was hopeful of taking advantage of this run, however, when struck with the whip near the 150m, the horse shifted out as it had an inclination to lay out.  He said after shifting out across the heels of Doradus, Chilly Charlie then became held up and was not able to be fully tested in the run to the finish line.

Doradus – began awkwardly and shortly after the start was bumped by Stand Aside which shifted out slightly.

Make A Call – J Parr, the rider of the 5th placegetter, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finishing line.

Darling Downs – began awkwardly.

Little Jeanie – Stewards permitted J McDonald to ride the filly half a kilogram over the allotted weight of 55kg.  Raced keenly in the early stages.

RACE 4 – Kia Ora Prague Handicap 1200m

Flying Destiny – was fractious in the barriers, reared and became momentarily cast.  The gelding underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race.  Stable representative Ms S Johnson was advised that a warning would be placed on Flying Destiny’s record for its barrier manners.   Blundered on jumping.

Shines – on jumping bumped Power Of The Brave.

Power Of The Brave – on jumping bumped Shines.  App D Gibbons reported that the horse was never travelling comfortably and was inclined to lay out throughout the race.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Stable representative Mr C Swan was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, must be provided prior to Power Of The Brave being permitted to barrier trial or race again.

Eau De Vie – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

RACE 6 – Darley Stallions Handicap 1000m

Sinawann – began awkwardly with its head up and lost ground (2L).  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Quick Tempo – in the early stages raced keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.  Hung in under pressure in the early part of the straight.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Swiss Exile – began awkwardly and shifted in before being corrected by its rider.

Unflinching – App J Stanley dropped his left rein near the 150m.

Dashing Legend – on jumping was bumped by Kote which shifted in.  Was inclined to lay out when placed under pressure in the early part of the straight.

Kote – began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped Dashing Legend.

Azula – approaching the 1300m was momentarily placed in restricted room inside the heels of Defining, which shifted in before being corrected.  T Clark reported that it took some distance for him to be able to obtain the lead on Azula with the filly then travelling satisfactorily in that position. He said, however, that Azula came under pressure rounding the home turn and did not close off as well as expected. He added that the filly, which was resuming from a spell, will derive a fitness benefit from this race and in his view will be better suited over a longer journey.  A post race veterinary examination revealed Azula to be displaying a slow recovery with mild heat stress.

Terrestar – slow to begin.

Kahawaty – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a poor post race recovery, to be coughing and also making an abnormal respiratory noise.  Stable representative Mr J Crowley was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, must be provided prior to Kahawaty being permitted to barrier trial or race again.

Love Child – J Collett reported that approaching the 1000m the filly raced very keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.  He said that Love Child was always inclined to lay out and after being ridden along from near the 600m gave no response and was very disappointing.   A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back on the post race condition of the filly.

Kirragirl – began awkwardly.  J McDonald reported that the filly did not travel well at any stage of the race and failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the early part of the home straight.  He said when out of contention, he eased Kirragirl down over the final 150m.   He said that the filly raced flat and appears to have come to the end of its current preparation.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was at a loss to explain the filly's disappointing performance and undertook to report back on the post race condition of Kirragirl and the stable's plans for the filly.
