Supplementary Reports:

KENSINGTON:  Sunday, 25 April 2021

Race 7 – The Last Post Handicap 1400m

Le Gai Soleil – rider J McDonald was questioned in relation to the tactics adopted in the early stages of the straight and the reason he elected to shift to the outside of Bound To Win rather than endeavouring to improve between Milk Man and Bound To Win.  J McDonald stated that after following Milk Man into the straight, his focus was on shifting to the outside to ensure Le Gai Soleil secured clear and uninterrupted running.  He said that his decision to adopt this tactic was principally due to the fact that he had been racing tight to the inside of Bound To Win and that he was of the view that its rider, T Berry, would ride in a competitive manner in the early stages of the straight and this may have resulted in his mount then being held up for clear running.  After considering his explanation, the Stewards found the tactics adopted to be reasonable in the circumstances.  J McDonald was fined $400 under AR128(2) for leaving the jockey’s room prior to receiving the permission of the Stewards.

RACE 1 – TAB Handicap 1300m

Black Queen – began awkwardly.

Gorshin – after beginning only fairly, shifted in behind runners from its wide barrier.  H Bowman, rider of Sur La Mer, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that near the 150m, he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Black Queen resulting in that runner being taken across the running of Gorshin, which ultimately struck the heels of Black Queen and blundered badly.  H Bowman's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 19 May 2021 at the expiration of a suspension incurred at Randwick on Saturday, 24 April 2021 and to expire on Friday, 28 May 2021 (5 meetings) on which day he may ride again.

Light Up My World – began awkwardly.  When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages, J Collett stated that he was instructed to ride the filly conservatively today.  J Collett added that after beginning well, he rode his mount in a neutral manner in the early stages and when How Do You Sleep and Black Queen improved to his inside, he elected to then restrain Light Up My World in an endeavour to ride the filly in accordance with his instructions. He said Light Up My World commenced to race keenly and with the slow tempo of the event throughout the early and middle stages, he was unable to restrain his mount and obtain cover and ultimately Light Up My World raced four wide without cover throughout the event.  Trainer Mr G Moore confirmed the instructions to ride the filly conservatively and advised Stewards that he was satisfied with the manner in which J Collett rode the filly. Whilst noting his instructions were to ride Light Up My World conservatively, the Stewards advised J Collett that, having regard to the moderate early sectionals and in particular how the filly began and his prominent position in the early stages, he made an error of judgment by not continuing to ride forward in an attempt to obtain a position closer to the running rail and to avoid covering additional ground.

How Do You Sleep – raced keenly in the middle stages.  Laid out rounding the home turn and near the 250m, shifted out and bumped Light Up My World resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced.

Sur La Mer – laid out over the final 150m.  The Stewards opened an inquiry into H Bowman's riding of the filly in the early and middle stages and to the instructions he was issued by the stable on how to ride Sur La Mer.  Rider H Bowman advised that he was instructed by stable representative Mr C Duckworth to ride the filly in a forward position.  H Bowman stated the filly travelled strongly in its preliminary and said that this influenced him on how he rode Sur La Mer in the early stages.   He said after beginning well, he was reluctant to pressure his mount as he was mindful that the filly may overrace.  He said that as he was instructed to ride the filly in a forward position, after beginning well, he felt that Black Queen would improve forward to lead the race and he envisaged taking a trailing position behind that runner which would be in accordance with how he was asked to ride the filly.  He said, however, that when Black Queen did not continue forward to lead, and Supremo improved forward to assume the lead, Sur La Mer ultimately settled in a midfield position.   Stable representative Mr C Duckworth confirmed the instructions issued to H Bowman and advised that no specific instruction had been given to H Bowman to endeavour to lead the event.  The Stewards adjourned the matter so they could interview trainer Mr C Waller relative to the instructions that were given H Bowman.

RACE 2 – Bowermans Commercial Furniture Handicap 1100m

Shihonka – slow to begin.

Steelsheen – began awkwardly, shifted out and made slight contact with My Snow Queen.   Blundered near the 900m.  Rider R King reported that that the filly made an abnormal respiratory noise after the race.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover and to be displaying minor lacerations under the tongue consistent with it getting its tongue over the bit. Stable representative Mr D Beadman advised that he would now discuss the option with trainer Mr J Cummings with regard to applying a tongue tie to the filly’s race day gear.

Eve ‘N’ Ruby – blundered near the 900m.

RACE 3 – Robrick Lodge Handicap 1100m

Greater Harlem – began awkwardly.  Held up rounding the home turn before shifting to the outside of Overpass on straightening to continue into clear running.

Willowheart – began awkwardly and was then shifted behind runners in the early stages from a wide barrier.  App C Rawiller reported that it was his intention to lead however the mare began awkwardly and when several runners positioned to his outside showed superior speed to Willowheart in the early stages, he elected to ride his mount more conservatively and as a result, settled towards the rear of the field.  App Rawiller added his mount raced keenly throughout the middle stages and approaching the 500m, when the tempo was only moderate, the mare improved onto the heels of Insensata and as a result was obliged to check his mount.  Willowheart then continued to race keenly for a short distance thereafter and he was unable to fully test the mare until passing the 150m where he shifted Willowheart to the outside of Twice As Special to secure clear running.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame (1/5) in the off foreleg.  Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required prior to Willowheart barrier trialling/racing again.
