The big time barrier trials continued around NSW and TONY BRASSEL releases this week’s likely future winners.

EGYPTIAN MISSILE (Heat 5, Canterbury)
(4m, Smart Missile – Our Egyptian Raine. Trainer: Bjorn Baker)
Unplaced in a Nowra Class 1 two starts ago, yet impressive taking ground off PRAGUE, JUNGLE EDGE and EDUARDO in a 905m Canterbury heat. Finished almost alongside G1 Galaxy aspirant EDUARDO. This miss has scored at Bathurst and Orange but city midweek racing is right on the radar. Both parents won at elite Group level.

FORBES (Heat 1, Sun Goulburn)
(2c, Capitalist – Booklet. Trainers: Anthony and Sam Freedman)
Carried barrier stall demerits heading into last Sunday’s 9.67 lengths official winning margin. That’s precision! No problemo this time – the chestnut speared out and responded with every stride when Jean Van Overmeire gave him a send along. The 800m time was 45.31s with his final 600m in 33.00s. His only run resulted in a close second to ANAMOE – third to this colt’s stablemate ARTORIUS in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes.
TAB: $21 Golden Slipper, $26 Inglis Sires’ Produce.

GSTAAD (Heat 12, Canterbury)
(2f, Sebring – Maastricht. Trainers: Hawkes Racing)
Baldy-faced half-sister to LOVING GABY. Leggy like big sis’, she sizzled from just off the pace to land her second public trial over 900m at Canterbury. Racing in the SCHILLACI, GRAND ARMEE and DEEP FIELD colours, GSTAAD may just be Group class herself. Her initial trial at Hawkesbury resulted in a bounding second on February 15 when caught wide throughout.
TAB: $201 Golden Slipper, $101 Inglis Sires’, $51 Percy Sykes Stakes.

INTOLE RANT (Heat 3, Canterbury)
(3g, Smart Missile – Thousand Veils. Trainers: Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou)
No guarantees around Canterbury come his debut, this leggy gelding looks more an aspirant for a big, spacious track. In Tuesday’s 905m trial, he sat six lengths off more frantic types then glided up for Tim Clark, checking in fourth. Granted, he’s still learning but without ranting and raving, there’s plenty of upside.

OCEAN EMPEROR (Heat 15, Canterbury)
(3g, Written Tycoon – Bubbles ‘N’ Boats. Trainer: Bjorn Baker)
This four-race veteran (two wins), hasn’t raced since last October and performs okay fresh. Case in point, his debut Kensington victory over 1100m. He trialled against some heavy hitters at Canterbury and running third to WILD RULER and DOUBTLAND, comfortably beat home the Golden Slipper placegetter MAMARAGAN.
TAB: $101 Arrowfield Sprint.

QUIET RIOT (Heat 8, Canterbury)
(4g, Fastnet Rock – Gaudeamus. Trainer: Bjorn Baker)
Half-brother to another smart Canterbury trialler, the Heat 4 winner RAINBOW CONNECTION (see below). This leggy sprinter mixed it with pacy MARWAY and SAVATIANO when a half length third over 905m. He even beat home LIBERTINI. That’s not bad going for a mere Warwick Farm maiden winner on January 27, 2020. Bjorn Baker has long enjoyed success with first-uppers following protracted lay-offs.

RAINBOW CONNECTION (Heat 4, Canterbury)
(3g, Choisir – Gaudeamus. Trainer: Matthew Dunn)
Hefty, long-striding galloper very much stamped in the mould of his illustrious sire. Drew deep and dragged to last before rushing down the outside and a win. He’s unraced but was placed in a few previous trials. The most recent being a fast-finishing third to VOWMASTER and INTOLE RANT in their fast Rosehill (900m) February 11 heat.

SOLAR WINDS (Heat 10, Canterbury)
(2c, Zoustar – Saga Of The Storm. Trainers: Hawkes Racing)
Unleashed a storming gear change 200m out when appearing for the first time. He dropped the leader GREEN LEGEND in two strides once Tommy Berry clicked him up. A $900,000 yearling purchase and certain to be managed to the highest degree by Team Hawkes. Come debut day, it should simply be up to him.
TAB: $301 Golden Slipper, $101 Inglis Sires’ Produce.
