Jumping out after a freshen-up, Tony Brassel examines some eye-catching barrier triallers at the recent Randwick session.

ALL CYLINDERS
(3g, Testa Rossa – Star Of The Screen. Trainer: Peter Robl)
Absolute speedball and he looks it, too. He’s a muscle-bound sprinter with four wins to his credit – up to 1100m. Never in top gear when leading throughout in his heat, clocking an expected rapid last 600m figure of 32.99s.

AWAKINO
(2c, Dalghar – Ulfah. Trainers: Richard and Michael Freedman)
Unplaced in a previous trial, he returned in sparkling order for third to HURT MONEY over 742m. Big and strong, the grey came from last under little vigour and he even carries his head high, stargazing like that Freedman legend SUPER IMPOSE.

EMBELLER
(2f, Super One – Embellished. Trainer: John Thompson)
Ran third to the top prospect DOUBTLAND at the start of a two-race campaign in March. Her patient trainer unveiled her to run fourth in a trial last Friday, beating home the smart HARMONIUM. That’s a decent performance by a maiden.

EMERALDS
(3f, Sebring – Doulmera. Trainer: John Sargent)
Although unplaced in four Group races, her class shone through in the 1000 Guineas, Tea Rose Stakes and Light Fingers Stakes. Simply ambled around to rail from last and win her heat under firm restraint last Friday.

PHOENIX RIVER
(4g, So You Think – River Serenade. Trainer: Anthony Cummings)
Don’t pay much attention to his finishing position last week. He ran sixth but the brakes were on big time. After bolting just behind the leaders, he was never pressured and few better sorts did the rounds. He’s very much cut from the same cloth as dad.

REIGNITE
(2g, Sebring – Risk Aversion. Trainers: Peter and Paul Snowden)
Now gelded, he was unplaced in two runs through March after some decent trial form. The altered anatomy may make all the difference as he cruised home fifth in a short trial, hitting the line very much on the bit. May trial again before Team Snowden let him loose fresh.

WAR MEMORIAL
(2g, Fastnet Rock – Smokin’ Alice. Trainers: Peter and Paul Snowden)
Here’s another new Snowden gelding for China Horse Club and partners. Finishing out of the placings upon debut (as favourite), he showed infinitely more ability winning his recent 1045m Randwick trial. The time was slow but did he stride up boldly once clear!

YARDSTICK
(2c, Criterion – Exceleine. Trainers: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott)
Did this one go! Ran a sound third in a January trial then put away. Has returned an even better racehorse if this first-up trial is any indication. Once clear, the quick-stridiing youngster put four lengths on rivals at the finish. Most impressive.
