The Melbourne Mail

We roll on to the fourth and final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington and as always the carnival closes with a deep and interesting betting card.

We're sticking with the strength for our bet of the day with the Cup-winning stable throwing the saddle on another terrific chance in Grinzinger Star.

He ran well at Caulfield last time in the face of a sharp change in tempo race-to-race. He came through a very slowly run race first up and found himself in a high-pressure 1700m which he stood up to fairly well given the circumstances.

That can bring him to his top now, and his top stands out against the opposition on Saturday with a string of ratings last preparation that sit above where the others have been.

There's no doubts about the form of the stable at present and we are happy to be on them getting it right and bringing one to the races to peak at the right time again.

Race seven is the Chatham and it's invariably a good betting race. Widgee Turf was runner up in the race last year, and along with Iconoclasm comes off a strong Valley run that should work out well, but there is a potential map advantage to the Tony McEvoy-trained East Indiaman who backs up quickly after being narrowly edged out on Tuesday.

This is a deeper race but we think the back-up could work really well for him racing up on speed and he has a couple of very competitive ratings to his name. At double figure odds he is one that we want running for us.

Bet Of The Day: Race 2 #7 Grinzinger Star @ $4.00
