The Davis Files - Sha Tin review

The Davis Files - the comprehensive review of the meeting at Sha Tin on Sunday, June 6th, 2021:

Race 1 – Po Tin Handicap, HK $750,000

Class 5 – Turf – Distance 1200m – Track Good

Time: 1:09.74 Standard Time: 1:09.90 Course/Class record: 1:09.24 All Best Friends

Winner: MOON PEAKS (AUS 5yo g Choisir – Couredge) was away well form barrier five with Alex Lai able to get one off the fence in a lovely position as they headed into the turn. Lai would allow his mount to stride up to sit outside of the leader as they turned into the straight and hit the front with 300m to go. He found another gear at the 200m mark and kicked away to win easily in the end by a length and a half.

Runner-Up: FOR FUN’S SAKE was pulled back toward the rear of the field right after the gate’s opened as he jumped from the wide barrier. He made up some good ground from the back of the pack and ran on strongly in the straight, putting his head down on the finish line to finish second in a photo finish.

Run Of The Race: MOON PEAKS won easily, sitting on the pace and kicking away for an impressive victory in the opening race on the card.

Disappointment: UNIVERSAL CROWN started as the $2.60 favourite and looked to be in a good position in the early stages of the race. He began to over race through the middle of the event though and failed to finish off the race strongly, finishing seventh.

Comparison: Just inside the standard time.

Market Mover: UNIVERSAL CROWN $3.50 into $2.60.

Race 2 – Mei Tin Handicap, HK $1,000,000

Class 4 – Turf – Distance 1000m – Track Good

Time: 55.44 Standard Time: 56.50 Course/Class record: 54.94 United We Stand

Winner: SEVEN HEAVENS (GB 7yo g Frankel – Heaven Sent) jumped well and was able to sit just off the pace in this race down the straight. The field huddled towards the outside rail, but Joao Moreira was happy to face the breeze, sitting two horses off the fence. He took the lead at the 200m mark and didn’t look back, sprinting away to win it in impressive fashion by three lengths.

Runner-Up: SPARKLING DOLPHIN was a fantastic run, jumping well and leading along the outside rail. He was overtaken by the eventual winner but continued to box on well, fending off his challengers to finish in second, with a length gap back to third.

Run Of The Race: SEVEN HEAVENS made it look easy down the straight, winning comfortably in good time.

Disappointment: MILLENIUM FALCON was on the fourth line of betting at $5.80 and just simply got too far back in the race. He was trying to weave his way through the traffic, but Karis Teetan sat up on him over the final stages of the race as he was unable to get clear air and finish off.

Comparison:  Inside the standard time in a strongly run race

Market Mover: MILLENIUM FALCON $9 into $5.80.

Race 3 – Kwong Tin Handicap, HK $1,500,000

Class 3 – Turf – Distance 1000m – Track Good to Firm

Time: 55.26     Standard Time: 56.35 Course/Class record: 54.89 Voyage Warrior

Winner: JOYFUL FORTUNE (AUS 4yo g Nicconi – Sneaky Tsu) broke well from the barriers and crossed to the outside rail shortly after jumping to obtain the lead. After that it was a case of patience for Matthew Poon, as he pushed the button with 350m to go. He was in a ding-dong battle with Metro Warrior but held him off to grab victory by a head.

Runner-Up: METRO WARRIOR was away fast and was able to cross almost all runners to sit outside the lead early in proceedings. It was a game of cat and mouse between the two leaders, but Metro Warrior had to settle for second position, unable to catch the winner, with a gap of 2.5 lengths back to third.

Run Of The Race: JOYFUL FORTUNE was brave and tough in winning the race, fending off his rival when he could have easily given up.

Disappointment: BRILLIANT FORTUNE finished third but was still a bit disappointing in his performance. He sat behind Metro Warrior and Joyful Fortune in the run, but he was unable to sprint with them when asked by Joao Moreira.

Comparison: Inside the standard time and slightly faster than the other 1000m race prior.

Market Mover: JOYFUL FORTUNE $5 into $3.50.

Race 4 – Yan Tin Handicap, HK $750,000

Class 5 – All Weather – Distance 1650m – Track Good

Time: 1:39.11 Standard Time: 1:39.70 Course/Class record: 1:38.60

Winner: SURE WIN WIN (AUS 4yo g Deep Field – Sravana) was only away fair from the outside stall and was shifted behind the field in the early stages of the race. He was able to get to the rail as they entered the first turn and stayed there for the remainder of the race. He was over four lengths off the lead with 400m left to run but shot along the fence and finished hard to run over the top of his competitors to win by 1.25 lengths with a fist pump from Jerry Chau over the line.

Runner-Up: DRAGON COMMANDER settled in the back half of the field but was able to find clear running as they turned into the straight. He ran home strongly down the middle of the track to put his nose down on the line to finish second in a photo finish.

Run Of The Race: SURE WIN WIN looked as though he had no right to win that race but absolutely stormed home along the inside running rail to win easily.

Disappointment: AEROSONIC was in the market at $10 and looked to be travelling in a great position in the run before being placed under pressure a long way from home. He eventually drifted out of the race to finish eleventh.

Comparison: Inside standard time in evenly run race.

Market Mover: REGENCY GEM $13 into $6.10.

Race 5 – On Yam Handicap, HK $1,000,000

Class 4 – Turf – Distance 1400m – Track Good to Firm

Time: 1:22.05 Standard Time: 1:21.85 Course/Class record: 1:20.80 Perfect Pair

Winner: PACKING AWARD (AUS 3yo g Shamus Award – Exchanges) was away fast from barrier 12 and was caught wide for some time as there was a rush for the lead. As they passed the 1000m he was able to get across and settle on the outside of the leader. Packing Award raced very ungenerously for Zac Purton throughout the middle stages of the race, but he had the class to kick away in the home straight and run away with a 1.25 length victory.

Runner-Up: ULTIMATE GLORY settled in the back half of the field but was able to get to the outside in the home straight and rocket home under Alex Lai. He was the only horse who settled in the second half of the field to run into the top five.

Run Of The Race: When PACKING AWARD learns how to behave himself in the run, he’s going to be one serious racehorse. To over race the way that he did and then run away over the final stages of the race the way he did was remarkable. If he can mature and learn to settle, who knows what is in store for the three-year-old.

Disappointment: ZONE D was very disappointing in the run. He was building some nice momentum into the race on the turn and looked as though he would be in the finish, but he tired early in the straight and faded back to finish tenth, beaten 4.25 lengths.

Comparison: Outside the standard time where the early speed took its toll late.

Market Mover: ZONE D $5 into $3.60

Race 6 – Ping Tin Handicap, HK $1,000,000

Class 4 – All Weather – Distance 1650m – Track Good

Time: 1:38.08 Standard Time: 1:39.00 Course/Class record: 1:37.76 Gold Comet

Winner: FAIRY FLOSS (NZ 5yo g Guillotine – Hang Seng) was away well but Joao Moreira eased the gelding back behind runners shortly after the start. Moreira started slicing his as through the pack on the corner and as they turned for home got into the clear ran on strongly down the misled of the track. He had to fight off Super Fast over the final stages of the race, but was too strong, winning by a neck.

Runner-Up: SUPER FAST got away well from barrier six and Antoine Hamelin went forward on the gelding, settling behind the leaders. As they turned into the straight, he broke away from the pack to be a clear leader, but the winner was too strong, running over the top of him. There was a gap of 2 lengths back to third position.

Run Of The Race: FAIRY FLOSS was aided by an absolutely magnificent ride by Joao Moreira.

Disappointment: LADY FIRST looked as though he would continue his run in the straight alongside Fairy Floss but seemed to tire late in the event with the first and second place getters running away from him over the concluding stages.

Comparison: Well inside the standard time with some early speed in the race.

Market Mover: FAIRY FLOSS $9 into $3.10.

Race 7 – On Ting Handicap, HK $1,000,000

Class 4 – Turf – Distance 1200m – Track Good to Firm

Time: 1:08.75 Standard Time: 1:09.25 Course/Class record: 1:08.40 Master Eight

Winner: INFINITE POWER (AUS 5yo g Smart Missile – Hussta La Vista) jumped well and went straight to the front under Matthew Poon. It was a relatively easy watch for punters who backed him, as he led from post to post, keeping Lucky With You at bay and winning by a neck on the line.

Runner-Up: LUCKY WITH YOU wasn’t the fastest away but was eased forward by Chad Schofield to sit on the outside of the leader. The two front-runners would have their way up front. Lucky With You tried hard down the straight but he was unable to get past Infinite Power but did finish 2.75 lengths ahead of third position.

Run Of The Race: BREEZE OF SPRING was the only runner in the second half of the field to run into the top five. He kept on coming down the straight and finished in a comfortable fourth position.

Disappointment: VICTORY SCHOLARS looked to be in a prime position to win the race, but seemed only plain in the straight, finishing a distant third.

Comparison: Inside the standard time in a quickly run race.

Market Mover: VICTORY SCHOLARS $3 into $2.

Race 8 – Lai On Handicap, HK $1,500,000

Class 3 – Turf – Distance 1200m – Track Good to Firm

Time: 1:08.81 Standard Time: 1:09.05 Course/Class record: 1:08.31 E Star

Winner: DIAMOND BRILLIANT (AUS 6yo g Not A Single Doubt – Aringarosa) was pushed forward early by Karis Teetan o site outside of the leader as they headed into the turn. He was headed narrowly by both Winner Method and Drops Of God but he was able to grab another gear and charge between the two of them to win by a neck.

Runner-Up: WINNER METHOD was away fast under Zac Purton and was able to cross to the lead shortly after the start. He was in front for a long way but was just over run late by Diamond Brilliant with only a few strides left before the finish line.

Run Of The Race: IMA SINGLE MAN was absolutely storming home after settling at the back of the pack. He almost would have finished in the first three, but he had to check his run as he was running into the back of Diamond Brilliant. A very eye-catching run.

Disappointment: DROPS OF GOD was the very short $1.50 favourite for the event and was caught wide without cover for the majority of the event. He looked the winner with 150m to go but just tired on his run and managed to hold on to third in a photo finish.

Comparison: Inside the standard time in a quickly run event.

Market Mover: WINNER METHOD $11 into $3.60.

Race 9 – Lee On Handicap, HK $1,500,000

Class 3 – Turf – Distance 1400m – Track Good to Firm

Time: 1:21.22 Standard Time: 1:21.65 Course/Class record: 1:20.62 Preciousship

Winner: KASI FARASI (AUS 6yo g Reward For Effort – Disturbingthepeace) used the inside barrier to his advantage, staying along the rail and falling into a lovely position behind the leaders. That position though would almost cost him the race, as he found himself stuck behind a wall of runners until the 250m point, in which he was able to let rip and run down the breakaway leader to win by a short head.

Runner-Up: LEAP OF FAITH was caught three wide for the entire race, but was able to hit the front shortly after turning into the straight and break away from the pack. He was three lengths in front with 200m left to run, but just tired late and was grabbed in the shadows of the post.

Run Of The Race: FANTASTIC SHOW was extremely slow to begin the race and found himself 8.5 lengths off the lead just after the start. He was still 5.5 lengths off the leader with 400m to go but ran the quickest last 400m sectional of the race to only finish two and a half lengths behind the winner.

Disappointment: CHEERFUL DAYS was sent out in the market at $5.70 and after sitting behind the leaders in running, weakened badly in the straight and finished eleventh.

Comparison: Just inside the standard time and faster than the other 1400m event earlier on the card.

Market Mover: CHEERFUL DAYS $13 into $5.70.

Race 10 – Chung On Handicap, HK $2,200,000

Class 2 – Turf – Distance 1600m – Track Good to Firm.

Time: 1:33.86 Standard Time: 1:34.35 Course/Class record: 1:32.96 Not Usual Talent

Winner: THE ROCK (GB 5yo g Dutch Art – Barynya) wasn’t the fastest away from the outside gate but eased his way over to take the lead. He steadied the pace slightly during the middle stages of the race before kicking away in the straight and running on strongly, winning by two lengths under Chad Schofield.

Runner-Up: HIGHLAND FORTUNE sat behind The Rock for the entire event and almost looked as though he’d run his race at the top of the straight. But to his credit, he stuck on well and fought on over the concluding stages to finish second.

Run Of The Race: FLAGSHIP GLORY was enormous in running, storming down the centre of the track to run his last 400m sectional in a blistering 22.13 seconds to finish third in what was a very eye-catching run.

Disappointment: TOURBILLON DIAMOND was sent out the favourite at $2.80 and despite finishing fourth, you would have thought he would be closer in the finish. He is a horse that excels over further ground and maybe how the race was run didn’t suit him, but he should have been one of the strongest at the end, but he seemed to be weakening instead of getting stronger.

Comparison: Inside the standard time.

Market Mover: LOOKING GREAT $9 into $4.40.
