Supplementary Reports:

Royal Randwick Racecourse Saturday 5 September 2020

Race 9:Bisley Workwear Handicap 1200m:

Stewards today concluded an inquiry opened into G Boss riding on Icebath in this event. Evidence was provided by Racing NSW betting steward Mr L Dalton who reported that there were no integrity concerns in respect to the wagering on this event. After considering all of the evidence Stewards advised G Boss that in their opinion he should have made more effort in the early stages to prevent Lisdoonvarna from crossing Icebathand secondly after being crossed by that runner he should have displayed more urgency in his riding from the 600m, to move Icebathwider on the track before The Fire Trap advanced to its outside in an endeavour to ensure that Icebathwas provided with clear running sooner than what it was. After considering the explanations provided by jockey Boss and having regard to the manner in which Icebathwas travelling in the middle stages and the urgency upon which The Fire Trap progressed to the outside of Icebathnear the 600m, Stewards were satisfied that Jockey Boss's actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances, and therefore did not proceed any further with the matter.

Lord Fandango – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight App B Ryan stated that he had endeavoured to shift to the outside of Korcho however the gelding hung in and despite his efforts would not respond to his riding to shift to the outside of that runner. He added that as a consequence Lord Fandango was held up between Merlinite and Korcho over the final 100m.

Desert Path – Began only fairly.

Birth Of Venus – Rider B Avdulla stated that the mare did not travel well throughout the event and raced flat today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth advised that the mare would now be spelled.

Merlinite – Began awkwardly.

Etheridge – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. When the pace slackened in the middle stages was allowed to improve forward and obtain the lead near the 1300m.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Class 3 Handicap1400m:

Tim's Principal – Slow to begin and from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Near the 600m was steadied from the heels of Morpheus.

Morpheus – Hampered on jumping by Amy's Shadow which shifted out. Rider J Parr stated that the gelding overraced badly throughout the event and when placed under pressure in the straight did not respond to his riding and finished the race off in a disappointing manner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Leg Work – Slow to begin and shortly afterwards was hampered by Bellastar which was taken out by Harbouring.

Bellastar – Hampered and carried wider on jumping by Harbouring which shifted out.

Izzy Looking Good – Began only fairly. Near the 200m App B Ryan became unbalanced when his reins became tangled in his whip as he endeavoured to use his whip.

From The Bush – Slow to begin. D Panya rider of Denmiss pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a), in that approaching the 1000m she permitted her mount to shift in when not clear of Lose The Snip resulting in Lose The Snip being taken across the running of From The Bush which had to be checked. D Panya's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 21 September 2020 and to expire on Thursday 1 October 2020 on which day she may ride.

Yulong Base – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance A Gibbons stated his mount blundered on jumping and then was caught wide and without cover for the majority of the event. He added for a short distance near the 600m the gelding made an abnormal respiratory noise but then on straightening again blundered when he commenced to ride his mount out and after this weakened noticeably in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Morgan expressed disappointment with the performance and advised that the gelding will be inspected by his veterinarian, the results of which he will report to the Stewards. Mr Morgan added that Yulong Base would now be spelled upon return to the stable. Notwithstanding this advice Mr Morgan was advised that the gelding would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.

Dulette – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils for the second occasion. Trainer Mr W Wilkes was advised of the provisions under AR79(6).

Denmiss – When questioned regarding the mare racing more forward today rider D Panya stated that her intention was to ride Denmiss conservatively but when her mount began well and there was no prospect of obtaining a position with cover she elected to allow the mare to stride forward where it raced outside the leader.

Harbouring – Began only fairly and was then hampered by Morpheus which shifted out. Near the 1000m when inclined to overrace it was checked from the heels of Yulong Base when taken out by Morpheus, which when being steadied from the heels of From The Bush commenced to race keenly and shifted out, despite the efforts of its rider. Hung out throughout the middle stages and weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Amy's Shadow – Began awkwardly.

RACE 3: Cleanaway Handicap 1800m:

Zacada – When being shifted behind runners was inclined to overrace in the early stages. Overraced throughout the early and middle stages.

Knights Order – During its preliminary made contact with the outside fence and sustained a laceration to its chest. Acting on veterinary advice the gelding was a late scratching at 1:25pm

The Stewards ruled that all moneys invested on Knights Order be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 1:25pm be subject to the following deductions from the face value of each ticket.

1stBadoosh 3 cents win, 3 cents place;

2ndQuintessa 4 cents place;

3rdShe's Ideel 3 cents place.

Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Knights Order barrier trialling or racing again.

Yonkers – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Held up making the home turn and in the straight was inclined to lay in.

New King – Shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Yonkers and Vegas Jewel. From a wide barrier was then shifted behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding the performance H Bowman stated that with the moderate early pace New King was inclined to race keenly throughout the early and middle stages. He added that when placed under pressure from the 500m New King initially responded well to his riding but nearing the 250m its run ended due to the manner in which it overraced in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have sustained an abrasion to the near fore pastern.

Vegas Jewel – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Passing the 500m became unbalanced when bumped by Attorney which shifted out to improve. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be 2/5 lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Vegas Jewel barrier trialling or racing again.

Trainer Mr C Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Guise barrier trialling or racing again.

Tonsor – Near the 800m was steadied from the heels of Goldfinch (D Panya) which shifted in when not quite clear. D Panya was reprimanded.

Akari – Near the 50m was steadied when crowded between Hilo which shifted in slightly and Kookabaa (App B Ryan) which shifted out. App Ryan was reprimanded.

Masked Crusader –When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding which was obliged to race four wide without cover T Berry advised that he was issued with no specific instructions other than to ride his mount where comfortable. He added that after beginning fairly he was positioned to the outside and in advance of Fituese and when that runner crossed to obtain cover behind Tonsor he was able to obtain a position behind Goldfinch with cover near the 900m. He further stated that when Goldfinch then shifted into a three-wide position near the 800m his mount was then left racing without cover from that point. When questioned if there was an opportunity to obtain a trialling position behind Fituese T Berry stated that as the pace was only moderate in the early stages and as Masked Crusader had been inclined to race keenly in its first up run he felt to come back and take a position behind mid-field would have been to the detriment of the horses choices.

Hilo – Began only fairly.

Electric Girl – Stewards permitted B Avdulla to ride the mare ½kg over its allotted weight of 54.5kg.

Goldfinch – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped Fituese. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. G Boss was reprimanded.

RACE 5: Drinkwise Dulcify Quality 1500m (Listed):

Aim – Near the 250m Jet Propulsion was taken out slightly by Yardstick when that runner shifted out when inclined to lay out. As a consequence Jet Propulsion shifted out further resulting in Global Quest being taken out towards Mo'Unga as that runner was improving into a narrow run between Global Quest and Bazooka. As a consequence Mo'Unga became awkwardly placed on the heels of Global Quest which shifted out further which resulted in Bazooka being shifted wider and Aim having to be steadied from the heels of Bazooka.

Overlord – Slow to begin (2L). Near the 800m became badly unbalanced and lost ground when reluctant to hold its position to the inside of Global Quest. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have lost its off-fore plate. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised that Overlord would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before racing again.

Mo'Unga – Began awkwardly and from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Near the 800m was checked to avoid the heels of Overlord resulting in Mo'Unga shifting out and Black Duke then being taken wider on the track at that point.

Black Duke – Slow to begin. In the early stages raced keenly. Near the 500m became awkwardly placed on the heels of Bazooka and had to be steadied.

Yardstick – Rider N Rawiller reported that the colt overraced in the early stages however he was reluctant to restrain his mount as it had shown a tendency in the past to resent this. He added that the colt eventually settled with him passing the 1200m.

Jet Propulsion – Slow to begin. Laid in over the final 100m. Rider T Berry was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out fully to the finish of the race.

Bazooka– An inquiry was opened into the reason for Bazooka and Easy Campese being presented into the mounting enclosure with the incorrect saddles. After taking evidence from riders J Penza and J Collett and trainers J Sargent and D Payne the matter was adjourned for further investigation.

RACE 6: De Bortoli Wines Run To The Rose 1200m (Group 2):

Farnan – An inquiry was opened into the tactics adopted on the colt and in particular the fast pace set throughout the early stages of the event. Rider H Bowman stated he was issued with no specific instructions however the stable had expected the colt to either lead or race outside the other on pace runner Rothfire. Rider H Bowman stated that in the early stages when he was positioned outside Rothfire he observed its rider J Byrne not showing a positive intention to hold the lead and he therefore elected to ride Farnan forward to lead. He stated that after riding his mount in this manner Farnan commenced to race keenly and took charge which resulted in the colt setting very fast early sectionals (1000m to the 800m 10.34, 800m to 600m 10.88). Co-trainer Mr A Bott confirmed the nature of the instructions and advised there was no requirement for the colt to hold the lead. The inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed so Stewards could consider the evidence provided. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be slow to recover.

King's Legacy – Bumped on jumping by Mamaragan. .Soon after the start Mamaragan and King's Legacy were hampered when crowded by Peltzer which was taken in by Farnan.

Mamaragan – Began awkwardly and bumped King's Legacy. Over the final 50m was not fully tested when placed close to the heels of Farnan.

Ole Kirk – Began awkwardly and from the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

RACE 7: Iron Jack Theo Marks Stakes 1300m (Group 2)

Niccanova – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance rider R Bayliss stated that whilst the gelding raced keenly in the middle stages it raced in a similar manner at its last start where it was able to finish its race off well. He could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance other than to say that it may not have been suited to racing on the inside section of the track. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Carmody undertook to report back on the post-race condition of the gelding in the days subsequent.

Ranier – Began only fairly and was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Funstar –When questioned regarding his riding of the mare and as to whether there was an opportunity to cross Wild Planet and Niccanova in the early stages to avoid racing three wide and without cover, J McDonald stated that his instructions were to settle in a mid-field position but he was not to make use of the mare in the early stages. He added that whilst he was initially of the view he may have been able to cross Wild Planet and Niccanova, when those runners held their positions to his inside he was reluctant to ride his mount forward to cross those horses, bearing in mind his instructions. He added he was then obliged to remain in a three wide position whereby Funstar remained racing without cover for the majority of the event. Trainer C Waller confirmed the instructions were to obtain cover on the mare however it would not have been in contrast of the instructions to make use of Funstar to cross Wild Planet. After considering the explanation by J McDonald and having regard to his belief that he was not to make use of the mare in the early stages, Stewards found that his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.

Wild Planet – Slow to begin. From the 350m to the 250m was held up for clear running. Lost its near hind plate in running.

Special Reward– Held up for clear running between the 400m and the 250m. Over the final 100m laid in and near the 50m rider N Rawiller was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Signore Fox – Began only fairly and was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Between the 400m and the 300m was held up for clear running.

Shout The Bar – Raced wide and without cover throughout.

Mizzy – When questioned regarding the performance R Bayliss stated that the mare travelled well in the event with cover but when under pressure in the straight and when briefly tightened between Seasons and Fasika near the 250m commenced to give ground from that point. He added that in his opinion Mizzy would derive a fitness benefit from today's race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover and to have an abrasion to the offside knee. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition of the mare in the days subsequent.

Positive Peace – Near the 50m was steadied when crowded between Adelong and Invictus Salute which was taken in slightly by Seasons.

Sweet Deal – Stewards permitted N Rawiller to ride the mare ½kg over its allotted weight of 55.5kg. Trainer J Thompson was fined the sum of $500 under AR185 for changing the girth which contributed to N Rawiller returning to scale overweight.

Outback Barbie – Began awkwardly.

Evalina – Began awkwardly and lost ground (2L). Between the 350m and the 250m was held up when being shifted to the outside if runners to secure a clear run.

Adelong – Trainer Mr B Widdup was fined the sum of $200 under LR36 for the late declaration of App J Van Overmeire as the rider of the mare.

Jen Rules – Slow to begin.

Seasons – Near the 300m improved into a narrow run between Mizzy and Invictus Salute and was then held up until the 200m when Invictus Salute shifted out.

Subpoenaed – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Briefly held up on the home turn. Over the concluding stages raced in restricted room to the inside of Jen Rules and as a consequence was unable to be fully tested.

Zaniah – Began only fairly and was then crowded between River Bird and Shout The Bar which shifted in.

RACE 9: Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap 1500m:

Entente – In the early stages overraced. When questioned regarding his riding and as to whether there was an opportunity to hold the lead rider T Clark stated that his instructions were to be positive and had anticipated leading on the gelding. He stated that after beginning only fairly he rode Entente to endeavour to comply with his instruction but nearing the 1200m when Discharged and Ocean Go were travelling stronger than his mount, he elected to allow those runners to cross. He added that after obtaining this trailing position Bobby Dee then improved forward to race outside Discharged which then resulted in Entente losing its position behind the leaders and being shuffled back. He further added that when Kingsheir maintained its position to his inside and Ocean Go was unable to improve he became held up on the heels of that runner between the 450m and the 250m which resulted in Entente losing momentum at that stage of the race. He was then able to improve to the inside of Ocean Go and as his mount commenced to make ground, he was then again hampered nearing the 100m when Papal Warrior shifted out to improve. After considering his explanation in relation to the tacts adopted in the early stages Stewards were satisfied that his actions were not unreasonable given that he had tested his mount in the early stages in an attempt to hold the lead.

Bobby Dee – Near the 100m was steadied when crowded between Cisco Bay and Kingsheir which shifted out. Near the 50m again was steadied when crowded between Cisco Bay and Ocean Go.

Laure Me In – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Discharged – Lost its off-hind plate en route to the barriers. When the gelding was unable to be replated, in consultation with Co-trainer Mr A Bott it was permitted to race barefoot behind.

Star Karen – From a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Trainer Mr C Waller was fined the sum of $100 under AR206 for presenting the mare in blinkers which was not part of its approved gear. .

Orcein – On jumping had to be steadied when crowded by Betcha Flying which shifted in. In the middle stages raced keenly. Over the final 50m could not be tested when racing in restricted room between Laure Me In and Amitto.

Cisco Bay – From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Ocean Go – Near the 100m was steadied when crowded between Bobby Dee and Entente which was taken out by Papal Warrior.

Amitto – Began only fairly and shortly after was crowded between Entente and Orcein which was taken in. Near the 800m was steadied when momentarily crowded by Papal Warrior which shifted in slightly. Between the 350m and the 300m was held up behind Entente. Approaching the 100m became awkwardly placed on the heels of Cisco Bay before improving into a narrow run between Cisco Bay and Orcein inside the 100m.

Papal Warrior – When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages and in particular if he was able to hold a more forward position to the inside of Entente rider T Berry stated that he had expected to continue a forward move and lead and this would then allow him to take a trailling position behind the leaders. He added that when Entente did not continue forward, he then became shuffled back in the field when Bobby Dee then commenced a forward move to race outside the lead. He added that in the straight he had difficulty obtaining clear running when he was positioned behind Kingsheir and once clear shifted to the outside of Discharged and was able to finish the race off well. T Berry agreed with the Stewards in that he had made an error of judgment in the early stages in not maintaining his position to the inside of Entente which would have allowed him to secure a more prominent and advantageous position.
