Nugget opens as the Scone Cup favourite

The two-day Scone Carnival commences on Friday with the feature $200,000, Listed Darley Scone Cup (1600m) drawing a capacity field of 16, plus four emergencies, with the Caron Maher trained Nugget (GB) the TAB opening favourite at $4.20.

Nugget, the winner of the 2022 Listed Lord Stakes over 1700m at Sandown, comes off a fourth place in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile over 1600m on a Heavy 8 at Randwick on April 6th, a race he finished third in last year.

The seven-year-old Siyouni gelding carried 51.5kg in the Doncaster to finish 3/4L from the winner Celestial Legend with 49kg.  With the Scone track set to continue to improve into Friday Nugget has won six times and placed in a further six from 19 starts on Good rated tracks.

Apprentice Dylan Gibbons rides with 59.5kg and barrier eight.

Last start Rosehill winner Waterford (IRE) is on the second line of the market at $5.50. Tommy Berry rides the Chris Waller trained five-year-old Awtaad gelding with 57kg and barrier nine.

The Scone Cup is Race 8 at 3.45pm.

The nine-race programme, with 174 overall acceptances, commences at 11.35am with a capacity maiden field of 14 in the $50,000, Select Events Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1300m).

The track is rated a Soft 6 on Wednesday with the rail in the True position.

Scone’s weather forecast is for partly cloudy days on Thursday and Friday with 21c and 23c.
