The two-year-old’s commenced Rosehill’s programme as NSW metropolitan racing returned to the city on Saturday and it was the Chris Waller trained Madame Pommery under Jay Ford who opened the champagne handling the Heavy 9 track with ease in the $130,000, Precise Fire Handicap (1200m).
The No Nay Never filly was sixth in debut over 1100m on a Soft 6 at the same track back on January 15th. Given a short time away from the race track and prepared with two trials she returned on Saturday showing improvement with her earlier experience.
Ford settled Madame Pommery in fourth as $4.60 second favourite and first starter O’Tycoon under Rachel King led the field down the back and across the top. Passing the 400m O’Tycoon folded quickly and Vinnie’s Spirit and Jason Collett took over . The $4.20 favourite Northern Beaches (57kg) and Hugh Bowman came with a wide run from the rear racing in the middle of the track and loomed to take over, however, it was the unfancied stablemate Madame Pommery (54lkg) and Ford who had the momentum.
Once into the lead at the 200m Madame Pommery and Ford left the rest behind and went away to a 3 1/4L win. Dark Harmony (Mikki Isle) (56kg) and Kathy O’Hara came through to take second from Northern Beaches (Not A Single Doubt) and Bowman, the margin 1/4L. Vinnie’S Spirit was fourth and the rest over 2L away.
The time was 1.15.11 with the final 600m in 36.68. Madame Pommery paid $14.00 on fixed odds after opening at $11.00 and $17.40 on the tote.

“The owners have been patient and they will be excited. We thought a bit of her and she has a very bright future,” said Waller.
“She always travelled very well for me. She will be even better when she stretches out in distance,” said Ford who confirmed the genuine heavy but safe track conditions.
Madame Pommery, out of the Exceed And Excel mare Cancel, is owned by a ladies syndicate who no doubt enjoyed the Australian Turf Club’s champagne hospitality as they savoured the win and their filly’s earnings of $87,760.
