RACE 1: Stewartbrown Chartered Accountants 3YO Maiden Handicap 1400m:

Buoyant – Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarter of Rockierro. When questioned regarding the performance, App. J. Searle stated that his mount raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages and, as a consequence, was unable to finish its race off as expected in the straight. He added that, in his opinion, Buoyant would be better ridden with cover. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow-up on the post-race condition of Buoyant in the days subsequent.

Forever Invincible – Began awkwardly and, shortly after, was crowded for room between Zaratay and Brynner, both of which shifted ground. Raced keenly throughout the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that Forever Invincible had bled from both nostrils for the first time. Stable representative Mr R. McConville was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).

Rockierro – On jumping was bumped on the hindquarter by Buoyant, which shifted out. Laid out over the concluding stages.

Wealthofknowledge – Trainer Mr N. Doyle was advised that a warning would be placed against the barrier manners of the filly, which was difficult to load into the barriers.

Be Little Darlin’ – Slow to begin and was then shifted behind runners from the outside barrier in the early stages.

Zaratay – Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Forever Invincible.

Balmain Tiger – After consultation with Trainer Mr C. Carmody, Stewards permitted App. R. Simpson to claim only 2 kilograms of his 2½ kilogram allowance. App. Simpson was fined $100 under LR70 for failing to claim the full allowance. Balmain Tiger raced wide and without cover throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that Balmain Tiger had bled from both nostrils for the first time. Trainer Mr C. Carmody was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).

Brynner – Began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Forever Invincible.

Two To Tango – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 400m was inconvenienced by Forever Invincible, which was carried wider by Balmain Tiger.

RACE 2: Southern Cross Protection Maiden Handicap 1000m:

At This Moment – Slow to begin and, shortly after, was crowded for room between Monsoon Magic and Fear Index, both of which shifted ground.

Just Wai – The gelding became fractious behind the barriers, dislodged App. Z. Lloyd and made contact with the running rail. As a consequence Just Wai underwent a veterinary examination and was deemed suitable to race. App. Lloyd sustained no apparent injury as a result of being dislodged. Just Wai began awkwardly. When questioned, App. Z. Lloyd reported that shortly after the start the gelding commenced to race very greenly and, passing the 800m, put in an awkward stride and became unbalanced. He added that Just Wai continued to race greenly and hung out badly rounding the home turn and in the straight whereby he was unable to fully test the gelding over the final 200 metres. A post-race veterinary examination of Just Wai did not reveal any abnormalities. Bearing in mind the gelding’s racing manners, Trainer Mr J. Coyle was advised that Just Wai would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.

Test Of Faith – Laid out under pressure rounding the home turn and in the straight.

Karuta King – Laid in under pressure in the early part of the straight.

Fear Index – Began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with At This Moment.

RACE 3: Hasties Top Taste Meats Class 1 Handicap 1200m:

Boomsong – Began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Sepoy Star. When questioned, rider K. Jennings reported that he was instructed to ride the gelding with cover, however, shortly after the start Boomsong commenced to race keenly and refused to settle, and as a result was left racing in the lead. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Sepoy Star – Began awkwardly and, shortly after, was bumped by Boomsong, which shifted in. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider J. Van Overmeire had used his whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m, which is more than the total amount permitted under the rule. When Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that Sepoy Star had gained an advantage that resulted in it finishing in 1st place, in accordance with AR221(2), they declined to exercise their powers under AR132(10) and did not proceed with a formal protest. At a subsequent inquiry, J. Van Overmeire pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m. J. Van Overmeire’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 28 June 2022 and to expire on Sunday 3 July 2022, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, the Stewards were mindful that this was J. Van Overmeire’s sixth offence under the rule.

Nay To Remember – Began awkwardly and lost ground (2L).

Pole Position – Passing the 200m shifted in under pressure.

Slickman – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

RACE 4: Cleanaway Class 1 Handicap 1400m:

Field Wiri, which was left racing wide and without cover, was then allowed to stride forward to assume a position outside Kyalla approaching the 900m. Passing the 400m was bumped by Kyalla, which laid out.

Papadum – Began awkwardly.

Sir Artie – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Kyalla – When questioned regarding his riding rounding the home turn, and in particular whether there was the opportunity to remain racing closer to the rail which would have prevented the eventual winner Lolly Yeats securing clear running to his inside, J. Van Overmeire stated that rounding the home turn Kyalla was inclined to lay out and changed stride, and for this reason he did not make an effort to correct his mount to ensure he kept the mare balanced. After viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, J. Van Overmeire agreed with Stewards that he had erred in not making a greater effort to remain racing closer to the running rail, which would have prevented Lolly Yeats securing clear running to his inside rounding the home turn. He was further advised that in future he would be expected to ride in a more competitive manner than he did on this occasion. When questioned regarding the performance, J. Van Overmeire stated that, in his opinion, Kyalla failed to run out the 1400 metres of the event and will be better suited over shorter distances. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow-up on the post-race condition of Kyalla in the days subsequent.

Layla Of Monaco – Trainer Mr J. Coyle pleaded guilty to a charge under AR105(1)(b) in that he failed to report before nomination time that Layla Of Monaco had undergone tie-back surgery. Laid in under pressure in the early part of the straight and was reluctant to shift to the outside of Sir Artie to secure clear running.

RACE 5: Better Floors Maiden Plate 1300m:

Sawrey – Shortly after the start was crowded for room between Seany’s Girl and Zouson Boy, which shifted out. Passing the 900m was hampered and shifted wider by Midnightinmontreal, which shifted out. Sawrey then raced keenly when caught racing wide and without cover for the remainder of the event.

Sacred Alba – Change of tactics – option to be ridden further forward: Settled midfield. Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Ramses. Near the 900m, after commencing to race keenly, was checked and shifted wider to avoid the heels of Zouson Boy (J. Van Overmeire), which after shifting in when not clear then reduced the tempo of the race and continued to raced keenly thereafter. J. Van Overmeire was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he provides runners with sufficient clearance. In not issuing a careless riding charge against J. Van Overmeire, Stewards were mindful of the racing manners of Sacred Alba.

Ramses – Shortly after the start was crowded for room between Midnightinmontreal and Sacred Alba, which shifted out. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

Topple – Raced wide and without cover in the early stages and was allowed to stride forward to assume a position outside the leader near the 900m. Midnightinmontreal – The colt, which was fractious prior to the start being effected, began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 900m commenced to overrace and improved on to the heels of Topple, and as a consequence had to be checked and shifted wider to avoid that runner’s heels.
