Near the 1500 Metres improved to the inside of NICE BIRDIE and then raced tight to the inside of that runner for a short distance thereafter and as a result made contact with NICE BIRDIE. When questioned, K De Melo stated that with the horse stepping up to 1650 Metres tonight, he was asked to take up a forward position on his mount. He said although DASHING GLORY jumped only fairly, he rode his mount along in the early stages to comply with his instructions which resulted in DASHING GLORY being able to obtain a position outside the lead near the 1000 Metres. He added approaching the Home Turn he felt something may be amiss with DASHING GLORY as it hung in and as a result he eased it down from the event. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of DASHING GLORY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DASHING GLORY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination which must include additional diagnostic assessments.

When questioned regarding his riding from the 800 Metres, K De Melo stated that he was given the option if the pace of the event allowed him to do so, he should commenced a forward move in the Back Straight as the horse often does. He said he was also given the option if he was able to obtain a trail behind another runner to improve into the race, he should take advantage of that. He said from the 800 Metres he commenced a forward move and shifted to the outside of SERANGOON. He further stated that leaving the 700 Metres SERANGOON then shifted out and, bearing in mind his instructions, he looked to obtain a trailing position behind that runner. He stated when SERANGOON did not continue forward, this resulted in WONDER YEARS being caught wide at which point he recommenced riding his mount along near the 500 Metres after which WONDER YEARS hung out and did not run on in the Home Straight. Trainer D J Whyte confirmed the instructions issued and in particular stated that Jockey De Melo was asked to obtain a trailing position into the Home Straight if possible. Mr Whyte further added that, in his opinion, WONDER YEARS may not have appreciated backing up within 10 days from its previous race start. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

However, B Avdulla could offer no explanation for DAILY TROPHY weakening in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. The performance of DAILY TROPHY was considered to be disappointing as compared to its previous race starts. Before being allowed to race again, DAILY TROPHY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Noted to have lost its right hind plate after the race.

11MERCHANT PRINCE (H268)M L YeungOn arrival at the Start, M L Yeung expressed concern with his mount’s action. MERCHANT PRINCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who, after the necessary consultations, said the horse was suitable to race. When questioned, M L Yeung stated that from an inside barrier he was asked to ride MERCHANT PRINCE in a forward position and as a result after jumping awkwardly, he rode his mount along in accordance with his instructions. He said throughout the event MERCHANT PRINCE did not travel strongly and he had some concern with its action as it became unbalanced at various stages of the event. He added that on pulling up he also expressed concern with his mount’s action. Trainer R Richards confirmed that from an inside barrier he had asked Jockey Yeung to take up a forward position. He said whilst MERCHANT PRINCE had received some farrier treatment in the lead up to tonight’s race, he was satisfied with its pre-race condition prior to the event. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Mr Richards was advised that MERCHANT PRINCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.

11D STAR (G374)Y L Chung (-5)Prior to declaring weighed-in, the Stewards considered as to whether D STAR had been afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from Apprentice Y L Chung and Starter, Mr A Speechley, the Stewards found that just prior to the start being effected D STAR turned its head to the outside and as a consequence was slow to begin. As the Stewards were satisfied that D STAR turned its head to the outside just prior to the start being effected and was not being prevented from jumping by a starting gate handler, the horse had been afforded a fair start and was declared a runner. Before being allowed to race again, D STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
12GOLDEN SAMURAI (H024)M F Poon (-2)Making the turn near the 1000 Metres was steadied when crowded by SUGAR SUGAR (K H Chan) which shifted in before being corrected by its rider. K H Chan was reprimanded. In the Home Straight lay in. Over the concluding stages could not be ridden out when it shifted in and away from CHAIN OF GOLD and was awkwardly placed on the heels of RAGING BLIZZARD.

1. Adjourned Inquiry – 4 February 2024 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 9 (396)

HAPPY FOR ALL – Near the 1200 Metres was steadied to avoid ISLAND GOLDEN (B Avdulla) which shifted in when not clear. B Avdulla was severely reprimanded.

2. Adjourned Inquiry – 24 January 2024 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 8 (368)

ROMANTIC CHARM – The Stewards tonight resumed an inquiry, which was opened on 24 January 2024, into the reason for ROMANTIC CHARM (C Y Ho) falling near the 450 Metres, resulting in Jockey Ho being dislodged. Further evidence was taken from M F Poon (ABSOLUTE SUNSHINE) and evidence was taken from C Y Ho. M F Poon was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 450 Metres, whilst riding his mount along, he allowed ABSOLUTE SUNSHINE to shift out, resulting in ABSOLUTE SUNSHINE making contact with ROMANTIC CHARM and as a result of that contact, ROMANTIC CHARM fell and dislodged its rider, C Y Ho. M F Poon was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 February 2024 and to expire on Monday, 11 March 2024 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards determined the carelessness grade 2 and the consequences grade 5 and also considered his excellent race riding record.

ABSOLUTE SUNSHINE – M F Poon was found guilty of a careless riding charge for causing interference near the 450 Metres (see ROMANTIC CHARM).

Racing Laboratory tests of NICOLSON RETURNS, SHARPEN BRIGHT, LITTLE FAIRY, DIAMOND DIAMOND, ONE HEART ONE, SMART BEAUTY, ACE VICTORY, SECOND TO NONE, LOYAL BO BO, CELTIC TIMES, PANDA LEGEND, SMART FIGHTER, BEATO, JOYFUL PROSPERITY, SUPER LEGENDS, PATCH OF THETA, CHAMPION INSTINCT, GORGEOUS WIN, EIGHTY LIGHT YEARS, LUCKY SWEYNESSE, LUCKY WITH YOU, VICTOR THE WINNER, SWEET ENCOUNTER, FLAMINGO TRILLION, GREEN N WHITE and E LEGEND (28.1.24) proved negative.
