The Australian Turf Club hosts three $300,000, Group 2 races at Randwick on Saturday with 12 nominations received on Monday for the Expressway Stakes (1200m), 13 for the Apollo Stakes (1400m) and 18 three-year-old fillies for the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m). Nominations are extended for the Expressway and Apollo Stakes.
Matthew Smith has nominated his four-year-old Supido entire Buenos Noches to resume for a new campaign. Buenos Noches was last seen when second to Imperatriz ion the Group 1 VRC Sprint Stakes over 1200m down Flemington’s straight sprint course on November 11th.
Another nominated to resume is Godolphin’s Golden Mile. The 2022 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner was third in the Golden Eagle over 1500m at Rosehill on November 4th. The four-year-old Astern entire was third to Facile in a 900m trial at Warwick Farm on February 5th
Gold Coast specialist Kong Of Sparta is nominated after his dominant win in the MM Sprint over 1200m at the Coast on January 13th. The five-year-old I Am Invincible gelding won by 2L under James McDonald collecting $582,200 for connections taking his overall earnings to $3,218,050 .
The 2023 Group 1 Australian Cup winner Cascadian (GB) has been put forward for the Apollo Stakes. Godolphin’s nine-year-old New Approach gelding will be starting for the fiftieth time if he lines up on Saturday.
Cascadian is well acquainted with Randwick winning the 2021 Group 1 Doncaster Mile and 2022 All Aged Stakes as well as finishing third in the 2023 renewal of the latter. His 11 wins and 14 placings have earned the stable stakes of $8,440,575
The two-year-old’s compete in the $160,000 Pierro Plate (1100m) with 14 nominations, which are extended, received on Monday.
They include the Chris Waller trained Switzerland who is on TAB’s second line of their market at $8.00 for the Group 1 TAB Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on March 23rd, plus the Waterhouse and Bott trained Shangri La Express who shares the third line with stablemate Lady Of Camelot at $9.00.
The Course Proper is rated a Soft 5 after 34mm of rain in the last seven days. The rail will be out 3m for the entire circuit.
Sydney’s weather this week has rain forecast after a sunny Tuesday for Wednesday through to Friday with 4mm possible and 30c on Wednesday, 3mm and 26c for Thursday and 10mm possible and 27c on Friday. Saturday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy and 27c.
