RACE 1:  Highgrove Bathrooms F&M Maiden Handicap 1200m

The Artefact – Slow to begin.  Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

Topple – Began awkwardly and bumped Tanzimat.

Wine I Am – Began awkwardly, then shortly after was bumped by Cassilio and lost ground as a consequence.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be 2/5 lame off-hind leg.  Trainer Mr C Waller was told a veterinary clearance must be furnished prior to Wine I Am barrier trialling or racing again.

Mamounia – Began awkwardly.

Wonderwomen – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Tanzimat – Shortly after the start became unbalanced when bumped by Topple.  When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages, C Reith stated that he anticipated taking up a position behind the leaders and he was able to obtain this position in the early stages trailing Topple.  He stated that near the 900m his mount was placed in restricted room between Cassilio, which was racing away from the rail, and Fairey Barracuda, which took up a three wide position to his mount’s outside.  He added that for some distance after his mount received pressure from Fairey Barracuda and, as his mount was not comfortable when racing in restricted room, he restrained his mount and allowed Fairey Barracuda to cross passing the 600m to afford his mount greater racing room, where it travelled more comfortably.

CassilioSlow to begin, then shifted in and bumped Wine I Am. Near the 1100m was steadied to avoid the heels of Moon Reader (A Morgan), which shifted in when not quite clear.  A Morgan was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.

RACE 2:  Surething Metal Roofing F&M Maiden Handicap 1200m

Vandelay Style – Slow to begin.  Near the 900m improved onto the heels of Adelinda and had to be checked.

Rubigal – On jumping bumped with Spellcheck.

Orient Express – Slow to begin, then shortly after the start shifted out and bumped Woolwich.  Raced wide and without cover until near the 500m, where it assumed a position outside the leader Unyielding Spirit.

Woolwich – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Icing On The Cake – Raced ungenerously in the early stages when being restrained to obtain a position with cover.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Spellcheck – Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the race.

Baden Road – When questioned regarding the performance, App. R Jones stated that he anticipated racing prominently, however, after beginning awkwardly and losing ground, his mount was quickly crossed and as a consequence settled further back than intended.  He stated that his mount commenced to hang out rounding the turn from the 600m until straightening and lost ground through that stage of the race.  He added, however, that once balanced in the home straight, his mount finished its race off fairly and in his opinion it was not suited by the slow tempo throughout the early and middle stages.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Kir Royale – When questioned regarding his riding of the filly, L Magorrian stated that, as it has shown a tendency to overrace in its trackwork and barrier trials, he was instructed to find cover on the filly to assist it to settle.  After beginning awkwardly, his mount was crossed by Adelinda and Icing On The Cake near the 1000m and he initially attempted to find cover behind Icing On The Cake, however, when that runner was restrained by its rider shortly after and Kir Royale commenced to overrace, he was unable to obtain this position, so he then allowed Kir Royale to stride forward and cross Icing On The Cake passing the 600m to obtain a position outside the leader Unyielding Spirit.  He stated that when Orient Express improved forward of his mount passing the 600m he restrained his mount and allowed that runner to cross as this was in accordance with his instructions.  He added, however, that shortly after Orient Express became under pressure and commenced to lose ground, which obliged him to shift to that runner’s outside passing the 400m to commence to improve into the race, where his mount closed its race off strongly.  L Magorrian agreed with Stewards that, in hindsight, after obtaining a position outside Unyielding Spirit passing the 600m, he should have made more effort to maintain that position rather than allow Orient Express to cross, which caused his mount to lose ground on the eventual winner Unyielding Spirit and obliged his mount to race wider from the 400m and cover additional ground.

RACE 3:  Mounties Maiden Plate 1900m

Just Like Lisa – Stewards permitted A Bullock to ride the mare 0.5kg over its allotted weight of 57kg.  Shortly after the start was bumped heavily by Son Of Emperor, became unbalanced, struck the heels of On Bail and blundered as a consequence.  Hung out rounding the first turn.

Son Of Emperor – En route to the start App. R Jones was dislodged.  App. Jones sustained no injuries in the incident.  Began awkwardly and made heavy contact with Just Like Lisa.  Hung out rounding the first turn.  Hung in under pressure over the final 200m, obliging its rider to stop riding and straighten near the 100m.

Postulate – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Reginald – When caught wide and without cover in the early stages, was allowed to stride forward by its rider to assume a position outside the leader near the 1400m.

Jonah Tali – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

Ba Ai Gei Ni – When questioned regarding the performance, rider A Layt stated that his mount overraced until near the 1200m, however, travelled more comfortably thereafter.  He added that, as a consequence of his mount’s racing manners in the early stages, it failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure from the 600m and in his opinion it would be better suited in races over a shorter distance.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Wild – When questioned regarding the mare racing further back today, G Buckley stated that he was instructed to race prominently, however, after beginning only fairly from the outside barrier, he felt that his mount would have had to do too much work in the early stages to obtain a prominent position, so he elected to retrain his mount to obtain cover towards the rear of the field, where it pulled hard for a distance near the 1600m, however travelled well thereafter.

The Percentage – Raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Mount Smart – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils.  Stable representative Mr D Greer was advised that, as it was the first occasion, Mount Smart would now be subject to the mandatory embargoes under AR79(4).

Red Hot – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.

Spanish Pearl – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Angiolini – On straightening was momentarily crowded between Spanish Pearl and Soldier’s Desire, which shifted out.

Lessing – When questioned regarding his riding of the mare, App. R Jones stated that he was instructed to lead the race, as is the mare’s customary racing pattern, and after beginning well, and when a number of runners to his inside showed good early speed, he had to make some use of the mare in the early stages to obtain the lead near the 1000m.  He stated that in the middle stages, although he was aware that his mount had established a margin on the remainder of the field, he was reluctant to slow the tempo as his mount was travelling comfortably and he was concerned that, if he restrained it, it would commence to overrace.  He added that Lessing continued race well rounding the home turn, however when placed under pressure on straightening, the mare failed to respond to his riding and weakened over the final 200m.  He added that, although his mount may not run out a strong 1200m, in hindsight, it was not suited by the strong tempo set throughout the event and he should have made more effort to slow the tempo after securing the lead.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be 2/5 lame in off-hind leg.  Trainer Mr A Denham was told he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to Lessing barrier trialling or racing again.
