Godolphin weekend runners update

Godolphin's trainer James Cummings comments on the stable's runners at the Winx Stakes meeting at Randwick on Saturday.

Race 3 - Up And Coming Stakes-Group 3  (3yo Qlty)       (1300m)

ATHIRI (AUS) - 3yo Filly by Lonhro (AUS) out of Retsina (AUS)
“Whilst I have been pleased with the progress of Athiri since her effort in the Rosebud 1st up, it is fair to admit she was only rusty in her seasonal return.
“I have avoided the harder option of the G2 Silver Shadow with her as a result, and despite the weight she appears better placed against the less proven opposition here.
“If she can still demonstrate her fleet-footed sprint with the weight increase, I can imagine her sprinting up to these horses and doing her best to improve on her thin winning record.

AVON RIVER (AUS) - 3yo Filly by Fastnet Rock (AUS) out of Lady Melksham (AUS)
“This filly has been humming along quietly since a determined win at Warwick Farm over this distance at the end of last season. Her experience appears to be rewarding her now, but this race could be a bridge too far too soon whilst she is still on the improve.
“She may be the member of the team that doesn’t quite survive scratching time for a more suitable option during the week.

DEFERENCE (AUS) - 3yo Colt by Exceed And Excel (AUS) out of Obsequious (AUS)
“The increase to 1300m could pose as great a challenge as the class rise for this stylish colt in the G3 Up & Coming Stakes. His last start win at Canterbury converted on some excellent Victorian form, and we are pleased to saddle him up on another dry track for him to show his natural brilliance.
“This is an interesting opportunity for a talented colt on the rise.

Race 5 - Darley Silver Shadow Stakes-Group 2  (3yoF SWP)       (1200m)

FLIT (AUS) - 3yo Filly by Medaglia d'Oro (USA) out of Glissade (AUS)
“She’s demonstrated an abundance of potential and raw talent and a limited amount of cut-throat professionalism.”
“We sent her to the paddock early and she resumes here against horses with more tactical nous which will be challenging for her.”
“Flit is burdened with the task of taking on horses like Libertini who is a machine, but we expect there will be plenty of upside as her second racing campaign unfolds.”

TENLEY (AUS) - 3yo Filly by Medaglia d'Oro (USA) out of Fratianne (AUS)
“She’s matured a little more again and is looking strong ahead of this.”
“She’s had a solid preliminary and I’d like to think she can excel back on top of the ground.”
“She will be better off at the weights second-up in the Furious Stakes.”

Race 6 - Show County Quality-Group 3       (1200m)

CASCADIAN (GB) - 4yo Gelding by New Approach (IRE) out of Falls of Lora (IRE)
“He’ll get some attention after his nice piece of work in a public hit-out at Warwick Farm last week.”
“Without getting carried away, the horse possesses an excellent record. He’s down in the handicaps and has the opportunity to reveal a glimpse of himself.”

DEPRIVE (AUS) - 5yo Gelding by Denman (AUS) out of Defrock (AUS)
“He enjoyed his let up and I’d say he took full advantage of it by winning the June Stakes on the minimum.”
“He arrives here in a harder race and it would be exciting to see him take the leap.”

Race 7 - Winx Stakes-Group 1  (WFA)       (1400m)

AVILIUS (GB) - 5yo Gelding by Pivotal (GB) out of Alessandria (GB)
“It’s a pleasure to have him back in training after going out on a high.”
“His preliminaries have been just perfect.”
“We saw a glimpse of how that’s been unfolding in his Rosehill trial.”
“By my estimation and without getting too carried away, he will run a nice race.”
“But the effort he put in last season will be hard to replicate. He’ll be matching it with better horses every start, there’s nowhere to hide.”
“He showed great character last spring and autumn.”
“The pressure of a G1 return at 1,400m is a bit different.”
“It’s one thing to expect him to run a nice race and sail home in a G3 like he’s done previously, but it’s another thing to saddle up in a G1.  It’s another dimension, it’s about how he copes.”
“He’ll be closely dissected and analysed.”

BEST OF DAYS (GB) - 5yo Gelding by Azamour (IRE) out of Baisse (GB)
“His autumn schedule was thrown off track. Since resuming work, he has pleased us. I’ve got to be optimistic and expect our patience to be rewarded with a positive effort.

Race 8 - Toy Show Quality-Group 3  (F&M)       (1100m)

KIAMICHI (AUS) - 3yo Filly by Sidestep (AUS) out of Ouachita (AUS)
“Kiamichi is by no means at her best first-up and it would require no small feat to get up and beat the older mares so early in the spring.”
“She didn’t have circumstances to suit in the Percy Sykes, giving away weight on ground that raced more like good than soft, and surrendering the lead.”
“She’s enjoyed her spell and I expect her to be refreshed.”
“She’s impressed us in her preliminaries and will catch a lot of attention as a Slipper winner resuming.”
“However, we don’t expect her to have her preferred soft ground, but I appreciate that this filly is capable of improving into her campaign.”

SOOTHING (AUS) - 5yo Filly by Lonhro (AUS) out of Dreamy (AUS)
“She’s a little bit out of the handicap and it’s nearly a year since her last win.”
“Despite that, I’m pleased with her build-up and she gives herself another chance at a G3 win.”
