Race 1 - LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP TOUR HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

Senegalia Commenced awkwardly. Near the 500m shifted out over heels to establish clear running.

Megamea Commenced awkwardly and lost ground.

My Bella Mae Near the 300m laid out under pressure and was steadied when awkward on the heels of Senegalia.

Rich Fortune ($2.60 unplaced favourite). Commenced to weaken near the 300m. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise‑induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the mare's racing performance. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.

Lady Di Di Eased down over the latter stages. Rider Jake Noonan could offer no explanation for the performance.

Southern Fire A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the right hind coronary band.

 

Race 2 VALE JOHN RUSSELL - 1100 metres:

Snappy Secret Slow to begin.

Empressive Enuff Commenced awkwardly and lost ground.

Real Gun Commenced awkwardly. Eased down over the latter stages. Rider Blaike McDougall reported that the gelding may have a respiratory issue. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Talbragar Knuckled as the start was effected. Underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival, having not raced since April 2023 after having cardiac arrhythmia, and was passed suitable to race.

Flying On A Limb Raced keenly in the middle stages. Held up from the 400m until after passing the 300m. Over the concluding stages was steadied when racing close to the heels of Little Miss Kubi.

Oracle Son Approaching the 300m the left winker became detached.

Bon's Your Back Held up from the 250m until inside the 100m.

Ivan's Hero When under pressure near the 75m was steadied when placed in restricted room.

Midtown Boss Laid in under pressure.

Grinzinger Angel Rider Michael Dee reported that the filly overraced in the early stages and failed to run on. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

 

Race 3 FURPHY MILE - 1600 metres:

Beehunter Slow to begin.

Bear Story (IRE) Led. Tactics queried. Rider Ben Melham reported he had been instructed to settle in a forward position, noting the gelding is one paced.

Frankie Pinot Raced wide through the early stages before obtaining a position midfield with cover near the 1200m.

El Soleado Held up from the 400m until the 300m. Rider Craig Williams reported that his mount jumped away only fairly, was tightened for room shortly after the start and as a result settled further back than anticipated. Craig Williams added that when a run presented near the 300m, his mount was reluctant to improve, however once he angled to the outside, the gelding ran on well over the concluding stages. He further stated that El Soleado does not appreciate racing inside other runners.

 

Race 4 - TBV THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS STAKES - GROUP 3 - 1200 metres:

Reasonable Point Rider Declan Bates reported the filly failed to finish the race off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Durova Rider Ethan Brown reported the filly would derive benefit from today's first race start.

Ameena Rider Mark Zahra reported after walking the track prior to the race meeting, he was of the opinion that the straight was even and therefore from the inside draw, he elected to stay to the inside. Mark Zahra stated that the filly may have come to the end of its preparation. Stewards will follow up with the stable.

 

Race 5 ATA/BOB HOYSTED HANDICAP - LISTED - 1100 metres:

What You Need Underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival, having not raced since March 2023 after tie-back surgery, and was passed suitable to race.

Sans Doute Slow to begin.

Home Rule Commenced awkwardly.

Viviane Rider Damian Lane could offer no explanation for the performance.

Katsu Rider Jordan Childs reported he was satisfied with the performance of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

 

Race 6 RUBAROC GRAND HANDICAP CLASSIC - 2000 metres:

Sir Atlas (IRE) Slow to begin.

Fagin Raced keenly in the middle stages.

Garachico (GB) Raced wide through the early stages before crossing to obtain a position outside the leader near the 1300m. When under pressure passing the 200m was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Lauding (NZ) which shifted in. Rider Ben Melham was advised to exercise more care.

Sea What I See (IRE) Held up behind the leaders from the 500m until passing the 300m.

Aristonous (FR) Held up from the 500m until the 250m.

Special Envoy (GB) Approaching the 250m raced in restricted room for a short distance between Rebadge (GB) and Nishino Crescent (JPN) which shifted out before being straightened. Rider Jordan Childs could offer no explanation for the performance.

 

Race 7 - SUNLIGHT CLASSIC - LISTED - 1100 metres:

The start of the event was delayed 2 minutes after the bridle of Wolfy (NZ) was adjusted at the barriers.

Wolfy (NZ) Slow to begin.

De Bergerac Slow to begin.

Title Fighter Slow to begin before being hampered when tightened for room. Approaching the 1000m was steadied when tightened for room between Saltaire and Stretan Angel, both of which shifted ground. Shortly after passing the 600m was awkward on the heels of Hedged that in turn had been steadied. Again approaching the 400m was steadied when awkward on the heels of Hedged.

Core Concept Commenced awkwardly.

Stretan Angel Hampered at the start when tightened for room. Approaching the 600m was hampered when tightened for room between Perilous Fighter and Hedged which shifted in when overracing.

Hedged Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 600m when racing keenly was steadied when awkward on the heels of Shesallshenanigans.

I Am Unstoppable Rider Mark Zahra could offer no explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Hanchi Rider Jamie Mott was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(i) in that he used his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m.

Perilous Fighter Rider Thomas Stockdale reported the colt felt uncomfortable in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

 

Race 8 TAB AUSTRALIAN CUP - GROUP 1 - 2000 metres:

Atishu (NZ) Commenced awkwardly.

Young Werther (NZ) Near the 1400m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Esti Feny (HUN) (J. Mott) which shifted in. Rider Jamie Mott was notified to exercise more care. Near the 300m was steadied when tightened for room between Legarto (NZ) which shifted in marginally and Esti Feny (HUN) which shifted out and away marginally from Cascadian (GB).

Cascadian (GB) Held up from the 450m until shifting out to obtain clear running passing the 300m.

Mr Brightside (NZ) A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying soreness in the right foreleg. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.

Esti Feny (HUN) Rider Jamie Mott reported that it was his intention to settle midfield with cover, however after beginning well and when caught wide, he elected to race forward.

 

Race 9 LEXUS ROY HIGGINS - LISTED - 2600 metres:

Selino (GB) Slow to begin.

Mark Twain (NZ) Eased from the start. Hung out rounding the home turn and through the early stages of the run to the finish.

Daqiansweet Junior (NZ) Raced three wide without cover throughout.

Strawberry Rock (IRE) Raced keenly in the middle stages. Near the 1400m was awkward on the heels of Don't Doubt Dory. Held up from the 500m until passing the 400m.

Mostly Cloudy (IRE) Held up from the 500m until approaching the 300m.

Dunkel (NZ) Shortly after passing the winning post on the first occasion near the 2300m was restrained when tightened for room to the inside of Mostly Cloudy (IRE) which was carried in by Port Guillaume (FR) (C. Gaudray) which improved into a run to the inside of Strawberry Rock (IRE) when there was not sufficient room to do so. Eased down from the 300m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Dunkel (NZ) to be lame in the right hind leg and the gelding was transported for further examination. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.

Apprentice Celine Gaudray (Port Guillaume [FR]) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), in that shortly after passing the winning post near the 2300m, she permitted her mount to improve into a run to the inside of Strawberry Rock (IRE) where there was insufficient room to do so, resulting in Mostly Cloudy (IRE) being tightened in onto Dunkel (NZ) which was restrained and lost its rightful running.  Celine Gaudray had her permit to ride in races suspended for a total of 8 race meetings (1 metropolitan, 7 provincial), with the period to commence on Sunday 7 April 2024 and expire on Friday 12 April 2024. Accordingly, Celine Gaudray will be able to return to ride on Saturday 13 April 2024. In assessing penalty, account was taken of her guilty plea, record and that the incident was in the low range.

 

Race 10 HKJC x WORLD POOL HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

Full Of Sincerity (NZ) Slow to begin.

He's Our Bonneval (GB) Slow to begin. Held up from the 400m until obtaining a neat run between Rheinberg (NZ) and Dashing passing the 200m.

Belle Et Riche Slow to begin.

Tijuana Commenced awkwardly and lost ground.

Deekay Commenced awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the straight.

Fortunate Kiss Raced three wide and without cover throughout.

Golden Path (NZ) From the 400m until approaching the 100m experienced difficulty obtaining clear running.

Rheinberg (NZ) Rider Celine Gaudray reported the gelding did not feel entirely comfortable in its action and may appreciate tracks with more give. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
