Avilius (GB) has eight opponents in his quest for successive wins in the $1.5m, Group 1 WFA KIA Tancred Stakes (2400m), at Rosehill on Saturday.
Avilius is on the second line of TAB’s opening market for the Tancred Stakes at $4.80 with the Chris Waller trained mare Verry Elleegant (NZ) the favourite at $2.40. Mugatoo (IRE) is on the third line at $6.00 followed by Mustajeer (GB) at $8.50 with the rest $11.00 and over.
Godolphin’s six-year-old Pivotal gelding was third in last Saturday’s Group 1 WFA Ranvet Stakes over 2000m closing from the rear to be 5 1/4L from the winner Addeybb (IRE). Last year he won the Ranvet Stakes and went forward to dominate the Tancred Stakes with a 2 1/4L win.

Second in the Ranvet Stakes was the Waller stable’s Verry Elleegant (NZ) and the four-year-old Zed mare engaged in a torrid battle with Addeybb from the 700m with the two stride for stride down the middle of the track. Addeybb, Group 1 placed in the UK, eventually pulled out a 1/2L margin by the line.
The stable reported on Wednesday that the mare has come through the race without any issues . McDonald rides with barrier six.
Newcastle’s Kris Lees has accepted with three, Danceteria (FR) with Brenton Avdulla and barrier seven, Mugatoo (IRE) with Kerrin McEvoy and barrier nine and Mustajeer (GB) with Nash Rawiller and barrier two.
The Tancred Stakes is Race 6 at $3.50pm on the nine race programme.
The track is rated a Good 4 on Wednesday after 0.4mm of rain in the last 24 hours and 1.5mm in the last seven days. The rail moves out from 3m last Saturday to 6m for the entire circuit.
Rosehill’s weather into Saturday has rain forecast for Wednesday afternoon and evening along with between 2mm and 10mm forecast for Thursday and a temperature of 22c. Friday and Saturday are forecast to be partly cloudy with possible showers and 23c and 25c respectively.
