Family friendship lures UK trainer to Australian stable

When Mathew de Kock joined Robbie Griffiths in a training partnership late last year, one of the things the pair spoke about was the potential of luring international clients to the stable.

De Kock is the son of champion South African trainer Mike de Kock and it was through their travel to Dubai and England that the father and son developed a strong working relationship with UK trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam who has an interest in a Griffiths and de Kock-trained two-year-old first-starter at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Gonnadancealot, by Sir Prancelot, runs in the Neds Same Race Multi Handicap (1100m) in which she will be joined by another stable debutant, Tiz My Bay.

Chapple-Hyam purchased Gonnadancealot, which races in the colours of her father, former Australian Liberal Party leader Andrew Peacock, for $30,000 in Perth last year.

“We used her stables in Newmarket as a base when we race there and when we’re quarantining horses enroute to Dubai she looks after them for us,” de Kock said.

“Jane bought this filly in Australia last year and when we said we were setting up here, she knows us well, she left her with us.”

De Kock said Wednesday’s 1100m race was too short for Gonnadancealot, but expects the filly to develop into a nice miler.

“This race is part of her education, so we’ll be happy to see her be running onto the backend of the placings,” de Kock said.

“That would make us happy as we know she is going to improve as she gets older.”

Tiz My Bay, a filly by Cable Bay, has more toe than her stablemate, but can be sluggish from the barriers.

“If she is not too slow away and can be in a good spot, she’ll go pretty well,” de Kock said.

Gonnadancealot is a $14 chance with TAB with Tiz My Bay a $17 hope.

Crazy Ladies, a debut second at Caulfield on Boxing Day, is the $4 favourite ahead of the Mike Moroney-trained and Jamie Kah-ridden debutant Lady Audrey at $4.40.
