Fabergino heads a field of 10 in Kensington Stakes

A field of 10 sprinters has accepted for the $140,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday with Western Australian mare Fabergino heading the weights.

A last start winner, Fabergino is undefeated over Saturday’s course and distance and has a clear advantage on her rivals from a handicap ratings perspective.

Fabergino is rated at 108 while her nearest rival is Prezado on 102, who like the topweight has impeccable straight track credentials.

Prezado has registered five of his six career wins over the straight 1000m course and has the services of Melbourne’s leading rider Jamie Kah on Saturday.

Trained by Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Prezado will be joined by stablemate Sword Of Mercy who will be attempting to extend her unbeaten sequence this campaign in her first attempt at stakes company.

A three-time winner on Flemington’s straight track, Halvorsen will be lining up for his first outing since finishing seventh in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield last February.

Halvorsen had won his previous three starts at Flemington, including the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on New Year’s Day 2020.

In form Godolphin sprinter Pandemic will be attempting to add another stakes victory to his improving resume after winning the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

Pandemic has exceptional 1000m credentials registering a win and a minor placing in his two tries at the trip and Damien Oliver again sticks with the sprinter.

Fabergino opened the $3.60 favourite with TAB ahead of Pandemic at $4 with Sword Of Mercy at $5.50 just ahead of her stablemate Prezado at $6.

Saturday’s nine-race card has attracted 99 acceptors for the twilight meeting which commences at 1.43pm with the final race at 6.35pm, brought forward 30 minutes from last week's meeting after jockeys complained of sunglare in the final race.

The track was rated a Good4 at acceptance time on Wednesday with a temperature of 32c.

A cool change is expected on Wednesday evening with much cooler conditions expected for the remainder of the week and a top of 20c is forecast for Saturday with a 30% chance of rain.
