Ayrton (NZ), the current $4.50 TAB favourite for the $1.5m, Group 1 TAB Epsom Handicap (1600m), is under an injury cloud after co-trainer Mick Price on Thursday reporting to Racing NSW stewards' that the for-year-old Iffraaj gelding has swelling to its near hind leg and has lameness in that area.
Price said that Ayrton has been treated by his stable veterinarian, however at this point in time there is no conclusive diagnosis. He advised that the stable will continue to assess Ayrton and will report on the progress of the injury over the coming days and whether the condition may impact upon Ayrton racing over the spring in Sydney.
Ayrton, a winner of five of his seven starts, won the Group 3 Gunsynd Stakes over 1600m at Eagle Farm in June and resumed with a third to Harbour Views (FR) in the Listed Tontonan over 1400m at Flemington last Saturday.
