Ellerton GoFundMe page near target to assist with medical expenses

A GoFundMe page for Victorian trainer Mathew Ellerton had reached $75,815 of a target of $100,000 on Saturday evening. Ellerton suffered a stroke while in Bali this week and he is in hospital for urgent treatment before he can return to Melbourne which is expected to ne on Sunday night

Melissa Kennewell is the organiser of the GoFundMe page.

"Initially struck down with a dose of Bali belly last week, this has unfortunately progressed into a blood clot ultimately causing a stroke. Bound for Australia tomorrow, we have had the heart breaking news that another blood clot has formed in his brain this evening, delaying his trip home," wrote Kennewell.

Kennewell said that Ellerton has travel insurance, but Ellerton's family has had to fund over $50,000 in medical expenses before the insurance is available. The family now have to fund the next stage of Ellerton's treatment with the GoFundMe swiftly raising a significant part of the targeted funds.

Racing.com reported on Friday that it was understood that the Australian Trainers' Association is working with Racing Victoria to also assist with urgent funds to the Ellerton family to help with his treatment and transport home.
