Coup De Tonnere Rider Jordan Childs reported that when the pace increased near the 600m, his mount was left flat-footed and lost ground.
The Awesome Son Rider Damien Oliver stated that his mount had not been suited by the slow tempo of the event and failed to quicken as expected when the pace of the race increased. He added he had been instructed by the trainer to come to the outside of runners in the straight and after doing so on straightening, the gelding finished the race off well.

Lavish Girl Began awkwardly. Apprentice Teodore Nugent reported that the filly in his opinion raced flat. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Russians Rider Damien Oliver reported that his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages on a slow tempo and when the field quickened passing the 500m, the filly was left flat-footed and was one-paced in the straight. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 4 - MARK O'SULLIVAN HANDICAP - 1100 metres:
Japery Trainer Patrick Payne was fined $500 under the provisions of AR227(a) for negligence, in that a stable representative negligently applied pawpaw ointment to a minor laceration on Japery's near foreleg this morning without having gained permission from the Stewards in accordance with the rules. In determining penalty, Stewards took into account that permission would most likely have been granted if it had been sought to use the ointment, and Mr Payne's good record in this area. Patrick Payne was also severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR104(1) for the failure to update his treatment diary. Underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival on course and was passed suitable to race.

Apprentice Logan McNeil reported that the gelding raced flat and was very disappointing. He added that in his opinion it may have come to the end of its current preparation. He added that the gelding had worked well in the lead-up and the stable had expected a forward showing. He undertook to advise Stewards if anything comes to light in the coming days which may explain the performance. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be coughing. A sample was taken for analysis. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
Race 8 ANDREA McKERLEY HANDICAP - 1100 metres:
Prior to correct weight, rider Jamie Kah (Evening Glory, 2nd placegetter) lodged an objection against Scorched Earth (Damien Oliver, 1st placegetter) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference over the final 100 metres. It was established that Scorched Earth, which had improved around Evening Glory from on straightening, shifted inwards under pressure passing the 50m, making contact with Evening Glory and taking that runner inwards off its course. Stewards, taking on board the beaten margin, the proximity of the incident to the winning post and the manner in which both runners finished the race off, could not be comfortably satisfied that the incident warranted a reversal of the placings and therefore dismissed the objection and correct weight was declared.
Defiant Dancer Faltered when leaving the barriers. Shortly after was eased when crowded for room between Ginger Jones and Wagner. Apprentice Logan McNeil reported after knuckling at the start, the gelding failed to travel and was disappointing. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Grandview Avenue Faltered when leaving the barriers.
Wagner Shortly after the start was steadied to avoid the heels of Exeter which shifted out slightly.
Zipping Boy Overraced in the early and middle stages.
Scorched Earth Raced wide without cover.
Witchfulthinking Raced wide without cover.
Exeter Held up for clear running from the 400m until the 100m. When being held up passing the 200m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Grandview Avenue, was steadied and shifted in. Rider Damian Lane reported that he had thought that Grandview Avenue had shifted out further than it had upon straightening and therefore thought he would be able to obtain clear running inside that runner. He stated that as Grandview Avenue had weakened quicker than he had thought and It'sourtime had held a tight line to the inside, he was placed in an awkward position and had to restrain. Stewards noted his explanation and advised him to ensure he takes care in similar circumstances.
Sam's Image Over the concluding stages was steadied when in restricted room between It'sourtime and Ocean Beyond (NZ) which had suffered interference at this stage. Lost the near fore plate in running.
Ocean Beyond (NZ) Prior to the winning post was crowded for room, clipping the heels of Evening Glory, becoming unbalanced after that runner was taken in by Scorched Earth (D. Oliver) which shifted in under pressure.
Evening Glory Near the 50m bumped and taken inwards by Scorched Earth.
Damien Oliver (Scorched Earth) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the careless riding being that passing the 50 metres, he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Evening Glory, thereby making contact with that gelding, taking it in off its course, and as a result Ocean Beyond (NZ), which was racing to its inside, being crowded for room, clipping heels and becoming unbalanced. In issuing the charge, Stewards conceded that Damien Oliver had made some effort to correct his mount and that Evening Glory had shifted inward and away after the initial contact from Scorched Earth. Damien Oliver's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence midnight 15 January 2022 and to expire midnight 25 January 2022, a total of 9 race meetings (3 metropolitan, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account his guilty plea, record, his mount's racing manners, the contribution of Evening Glory to the incident and that the carelessness was in the mid‑range.
Race 9 AMANDA CHECKEN HANDICAP - 1100 metres:
Cloudy Late scratching at 5.47 pm by Stewards' Order, refused to load. A stable representative for trainer James Cummings was notified Cloudy would be required to compete in a jump‑out to the satisfaction of Stewards before being permitted to race again.

Win Bets - Vespertine - 7 cents
Place Bets (For Winner) - 7 cents
Place Bets (For 2nd) - Comica - 10 cents
Place Bets (For 3rd) - Award Winner - 8 cents
All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket.
Award Winner Underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers after being fractious in the mounting yard and was passed suitable to race. Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
Awapuni Princess Slow to begin. Apprentice Alana Kelly reported that the mare would derive benefit from today's first-up performance.
Jezoulenko Began awkwardly and lost ground.
Dana Point Raced keenly in the early stages and wide without cover. Eased down. Apprentice Teodore Nugent reported that he felt there was something amiss with the mare. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
Little Stevie Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
Dance To Dubai Passing the 400m was taken inwards to the inside of Award Winner which initially had shifted out to improve. Approaching the 200m attempted a run where there was insufficient room to the inside of What A Smasher (NZ) to a point where it was steadied approaching the 100m before gaining a clear run shortly after. Apprentice Laura Lafferty was advised to exercise more care when attempting runs in future. Laura Lafferty reported that the mare laid in throughout. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
Comica Inconvenienced passing the 100m and when taken out slightly by Vespertine which was also taken out by Little Stevie.
