Bold Star wins Kensington Stakes

So good is Morphettville trainer Gordon Richards’ form in Melbourne that he doesn’t even have to turn up to win a race.

Richards, who was at function in Adelaide rather than at Flemington on Saturday, won his eighth race in Melbourne from his last 13 runners dating back to June last year when Bold Star lunged late to win the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m).

It was the second stakes race win for the stable at Flemington in under a year following the Creswick Stakes win at Flemington of Gytrash in June.

The narrow victory over Causeway Girl registered Bold Star’s seventh career win from 17 starts with the $18,000 yearling purchase taking his earnings to more than $330,000.

Bold Star ($2.80 equal favourite) held the barest margin over Causeway Girl ($21) with All Too Royal ($4) in third place narrowly in front of the other equal favourite Time To Reign.

Time To Reign’s trainer Gary Portelli said he felt his three-year-old was waiting for his rivals and then was outsprinted to the line. He said he would take him back to Sydney and decide later whether to tackle the straight track again this autumn in the G1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) or G1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
