The final meeting of the 2021 Sydney Autumn Carnival is at Randwick on Saturday with 159 nominations received for the nine race programme including 22 for the feature $600,000, Group 1 WFA Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m).
Godolphin have nominated a strong hand with Group 1 Doncaster Mile winner Cascadian (GB), Savatiano and Kementari put forward.
Cascadian’s win in the Doncaster Mile over 1600m on April 10th was over Icebath (NZ) and Dalasan with the latter going forward to finish a good third to Addeybb (IRE) and Verry Elleegant (NZ) in last Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000m.
Six-year-old Street Cry mare Savatiano has won her last three races, the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill last November, the Group 2 Expressway Stakes over 1400m at Randwick in January and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes over 1300m at Randwick on March 6th.
Masked Crusader is nominated out the Hawkes’ stable after the four-year-old Toronado gelding’s second to the rampant Nature Strip in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on the 10th. Of Masked Crusader’s last four races he has won two, including the Group 1 William Reid Stakes over 1200m at The Valley on March 19th, and he has placed in the other two.
Phillip Stokes has nominated the 2020 Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Mr Quickie who was second in the VOBIS Gold Mile over 1600m at Caulfield last Saturday. John Thompson has nominated Dreamforce after his narrow second to Think It Over, fourth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes over4 1500m at Rosehill on March 27th.
The $500,000, Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) for the two-year-old’s received 14 nominations including the Waterhouse and Bott trained Frankel gelding Converge who impressively won the Listed Fernhill Mile over the race distance last Saturday.
Tim Clark settled Converge just off the pace as the stable checked on Converge’s credentials to see out the 1600m. Once into the main straight Clark allowed Converge to sprint clear and they held a 1 1/4L margin with ease at the line.
John Sargent has nominated Gin Martini (NZ) after the Rip Van Winkle filly was third in the Group 3 Baillieu over 1400m at Rosehill on April 3rd. The filly badly missed the start and she was 11th at the 400m, but then closed to be within 3L of the winner Saif.
The track is rated a Good 4 on Monday and the rail moves out to the 6m position from the 3m of last Saturday.
Sydney’s weather this week is forecast to be fine and sunny with temperatures from 26c on Tuesday to 23c on Friday. Saturday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day with possible showers to 2mm and 11c to 22c.
