Well-related colt posts maiden stakes victory

Supremely-bred Maximillius (by Written Tycoon) blotted the copybook of leading Adelaide 2-year-old See You In Heaven (by Divine Prophet) when landing the $127,250, Group 3, David Coles AM Stakes (1200m) on the Group 1 The Goodwood program at Morphettville in South Australia.

A maiden after two starts before today’s assignment, Maximillius virtually led from start-to-finish, hanging on ‘at the death’ to hold off See You In Heaven from recording her third consecutive win and her fourth from five starts.

Maximillius is trained by Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) at Cranbourne and was sent to post at the generous odds of $19.00. Runner-up See You In Heaven started at $1.85 favourite, while her stablemate Aitch Two Oh (by Headwater) took out the minor placing at $5.00.

Raced by his breeder Dorrington Farm, Maximillius hails from the immediate family of Black Caviar as well as a host of other top-liners including Ole Kirk, All Too Hard and Magnus. Magnus actually raced in the same colours before embarking on his very significant stud career.

Maximillius recorded the winning time of 1m09.80s on the Good 4 surface, coming home the final 600m in 34.67s.

Official distances were Half-Head x One-and-a-half length.

The contest also saw heavy support for the newcomer As Time Goes By. Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, the daughter of the ill-fated Japan superstar sire Deep Impact and former top-class racemare A Time For Julia firmed into $5.00 from double figures but failed to make any sort of impact in the straight after being under pressure soon after turning for home.

Formerly run as the SAJC National Stakes, past winners of the coveted Pattern Race include Group 1 winners Toorak Toff and Kaapstad (NZ) to name but a few.
