Weighing In with Bart Sinclair

Queensland media icon and Racing Manager for the Brisbane Racing Club, BART SINCLAIR, joins Sky Racing’s stable of columnists for a look at the wonderful Summer Carnival in the sunshine state.

MAGIC MILLIONS MEETING

EXCITING day of racing befitting a $10 million stakes lure. Only slight negative was the dislodgement of rider Ryan Maloney from the raging favourite Isotope in the $2 million MM Guineas. A bodyblow for her supporters because she appeared to be full of running at the time (300 metres).

MY TOP 3 TO FOLLOW

SHE’S ALL CLASS (Race 6) Mighty to finish a handy third after tardy start and being back and wide to the home straight.

SNAPDANCER (Race 5) Not an ideal racing pattern for the Gold Coast track but gave all in a determined finish and wasn’t far from the winner on the line.

STUTTERING (Race 9) Clearly now back in form with back-to-back good performances. Just missed here with very strong last 50 metres. Ready to win in the right race.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME

ROHERYN (Race 4) – Back near last early he sustained a powerful finish to get close in fast time. Flying at present.

BOOMTOWN LASS (Race 9) – Busting to win a race but for the moment can’t quite get there. Tries her heart out. Love to see her at 1200m with a good gate and smothered up.

SOXAGON 9Race 9) n- Humping 59kg was a bridge just a smidgin too far. In great shape as his past three classy efforts attest.

SNOW VALLEY (Race 1) – Had to some early work to lead from gate 12 and just told last 100m. Past two runs excellent.

WAPITI (Race 2) – Bad draw probably forced him to race further off the pace than normal. Found the line well.

RIDE OF THE DAY

RYAN MALONEY (KRONE – Race 5) Went back early and still near the tail at the home turn. Gambled by staying in close to the rails when others were steering wide. Weaved a passage to pounce very late.

RACING TRIVIA

ON magic Millions day last year ELEVEN ELEVEN won the MM Guineas (on the disqualification of ALLIGATOR BLOOD). Name his rider in the Guineas.

IN 2003 Queensland filly REGIMENTAL GAL won the MM Classic. She was ridden by Michael Rodd. Who was her trainer?

FROM THE STEWARDS’ ROOM

As is normal on MM day it was a busy afternoon for the stipes. Riders Ben Thompson (8 days) and Bob El-Issa (7 days) received careless riding suspensions.

BALLISTIC BOY (Race 3) – Overraced early and then was caught very wide without cover for the entire race.
ALPINE EDGE (race 6) was slow to begin.
SWIFT WITNESS (Race 6) was checked at the 1000m.

WALKING THE TRACK

The rating was set at Soft 5 for the opening race but was upgraded to Good 4 for the remainder of the meeting. Sharp shower after Race 7 did not impact on the ground.

WHETTING THE APPETITE

MM Classic winner SHAQUERO took full advantage of the rails draw but fancy his stablemate SHE’S ALL CLASS (third) might be the one to follow in the next 12 months. She needs to physically strengthen but that will come with time.
