Denis Pagan buys UK yearling

Victoria Derby winner trainer Denis Pagan has shelled out 85,000 guineas for a yearling by Cox Plate winning stallion Adelaide from a sibling to the dam of Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling at the Tattersalls Sale in the UK.

Pagan, who shot to fame as a dual AFL premiership winning coach with North Melbourne before capturing this year’s Victoria Derby with Johnny Get Angry, relied on fellow Flemington trainer Troy Corstens, who also was instrumental in him purchasing the Derby winner, to clinch the deal.

“I wanted to buy a yearling and I got one,” Pagan told racing.com.

“I went to bed last night hoping and I woke up this morning and I’ve got one.”

Multiple Group One winner and Cox Plate placegetter Russian Camelot was purchased by Danny O’Brien as a yearling from the Tattersalls Sale before finding his way to Australia.

Pagan said Johnny Get Angry, who is currently spelling, is ready to rejoin his team at Flemington to begin preparing for an autumn campaign.

Udyta Clarke in fight for her life

Popular Cranbourne trainer Udyta Clarke is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a medical episode at her property on Monday night.

The 72 year-old was rushed to the emergency department of The Monash hospital where racing.com reported she was diagnosed with a hypertensive brain bleed.

Clarke gained national notoriety when her recently retired sprinter Rich Charm won the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on the opening day of the 2017 Melbourne Cup carnival.

Vale Jim Marconi

Group 1 winning trainer Jim Marconi died on Monday night. He was 88 years old.

Marconi met with success as an owner, partnering with George Hanlon to win the AJC Derby in 1974 with Taras Bulba before becoming a trainer during the 1980’s, until his retirement in 2010.

Among his quality gallopers were Rancho Ruler, winner of the 1988 Group 1 Marlboro Cup (now Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes), Cossack Prince, Prince Marauding and Pride Of Rancho.
