Twin Stars in the Sires' Produce at Morphettville

Short-priced favourite Twin Stars (by Zoustar) had to pull out all the stops to post his maiden black-type success in the $127,250, Group 3, South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville in Adelaide.

A strapping colt trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy having just his third race start, Twin Stars fully benefited by a copybook ride by Barend Vorster and an inside barrier, but was pushed to the limited to hold off Hope At Hand (by Impending) on the line, with Miss Dunford (by Dissident) just holding on for third from the fast finishing King’s Consort.

A debut winner of a rich sales-related event staged at Murray Bridge on debut, Twin Stars took his earnings to $204,125 after just three starts, having also finished runner-up in the Group 3 SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at his only other outing.

Twin Stars was a $225,000 yearling sale purchase and is directly descended from a former South Australian star in Singing Wonder, and is now a genuine stallion prospect as a Pattern Race winning son of Zoustar at two.

Trained out the McEvoy’s Angaston stable, the progressive colt holds entries for major 2-year-old events coming up during the Queensland Winter Carnival including the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) in early June.

Runner-up Hope At Hand didn’t shirk her task at any stage over the closing stages and appeared slightly unlucky not to win. The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas trained filly was held-up at a crucial stage in the straight and was only beaten by a very slender margin on the line.

King’s Consort also looked a shade unlucky when powering home over the final stages into fourth — beaten a length by Twin Stars. The son of Ilovethiscity won the $1 milllion VOBIS Showdown over 1200m at his previous start and found the line strongly over the extra 200m of the Sires’ Produce.

Twins Stars was returned as the $2.80 favourite, Hope At Hand at $11.00, and Miss Dunford at $14.00.

Official margins were Long Neck x Long Neck.

Winning time was 1m25.21s.

Twin Stars is raced by Pipeliner Bloodstock Pty Ltd (Mgr: W G Mitchell), Sands Racing (Mgr: L Signore), S Petrevski, L Petrevski, M Lonardo & M Twycross and was confirmed as a likely JJ Atkins Stakes starter by his connections soon after today’s success.
