Surprise Baby jockey change

We are less than two weeks into the new racing year, but the spring jockey merry-go-round has already started with a change of rider confirmed for one of the Carnival's expected major players.

Surprise Baby will be ridden by Craig Williams when he resumes in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at The Valley on September 5, in what racing.com understands is an owner-initiated engagement.

Melbourne's premier rider replaces Jordan Childs, who was aboard for the Paul Preusker-trained gelding's three runs last spring.

After an eye-catching first-up fourth in the Feehan Stakes, Surprise Baby won The Bart Cummings with Childs aboard before storming home for fifth in the Melbourne Cup.

That race was won by Vow And Declare, with Williams in the saddle, and it is not yet known what Williams' first-up engagement means for his association with the Danny O'Brien galloper.

Surprise Baby is an $11 second favourite in BetEasy's Melbourne Cup market behind O'Brien's SA Derby winner Russian Camelot ($9), while Vow And Declare is a $26 chance.
