He said after losing cover approaching the 1000m Manbehindthemoney was required to work hard racing wide and this impacted on the horses finishing performance particularly as it was resuming today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.

He said that as State Of America was travelling strongly and positioned close to the heels of Oakfield Waratah, he was not able to shift in and prevent Colour Sergeant from improving to his inside just prior to straightening. He said that after passing the 400m State Of America was then hampered when momentarily crowded for room between Oakfield Waratah and Colour Sergeant. He added that the horse remained held up until approaching the 200m where he was able to apply pressure to State Of America with it responding strongly over the concluding stages.

After being crossed by Amarantz (C Schofield), which shifted in when not quite clear approaching the 1600m, Marsabit commenced to race keenly and had to be checked from the heels of that runner.
