Price & Kent unearth “nice staying prospect” in the SA Fillies Classic

The all conquering Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) stable captured another feature of the South Australian racing carnival when The Amazonian (by Akeed Mofeed) ran out an emphatic winner of the $152,250, Group 3, SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville.

Ridden with supreme confidence by Mark Zahra, the late developing daughter of Akeed Mofeed (GB) traveled like the winner a long way from home and never looked likely to be caught when sprinting to the lead shortly after turning into the straight before winning as she pleased.

Given an easy time over the closing stages when well clear of her opposition, The Amazonian proved to be much too good for Lady Chant (by War Chant) in second and Great Mystery (by Redoute’s Choice) in third.

The Amazonian won over 2040m on a Heavy track at Cranbourne in mid-November and excelled over the 2500m distance of today’s assignment — a race formerly known as the SAJC South Australian Oaks.

Spelled immediately after running third at Moonee Valley at the back-end of November, Price and Kent (Jnr) sent her into the extended ‘mile and a half’ contest with just two runs under her belt.

Speaking after the win, co-trainer Mick Price observed “She has proven herself as a nice staying prospect so we'll work with that”.

The Amazonian won by an easy Three and three-quarter lengths winning margin from Lady Chant, who in turn held a Neck advantage over minor placegetter Great Mystery.

Winning time was 2m39.80s (last 600m in 36.26s).

Raced by Mr S P Hedge, Mr D J Slocum, Mr R I Chapman, Talinga Girls, Mr T C Eddy, Mr A Bennetto, Mr T P Carrigg, Mr S J O’Rourke, Mr A J Kemm, Mr A Tomlin, Mr T J Jackson, Ms S R Bates, Mr C S H Turner, Mr V G Schlesniak (Jnr), Ms S Cawthray, Mrs L Rossiter, Mr B W Livy, Mr C Kaye, Mr R J Peters & Mr B T Corcoran, The Amazonian became the first Group winner for Akeed Mofeed (GB), a Hong Kong Cup (2400m) winning son of the profound European Classic winning source Dubawi.
