RACE 1:  David Wallace Memorial Maiden Plate 1600m

Nomorebourbons – As R Freeman was indisposed, Stewards permitted L Magorrian to be substituted as the rider of the filly.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be 2/5 lame in the near-foreleg.  Trainer Mr B Hill was told a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Nomorebourbons barrier trialling or racing again.

 

South – Began awkwardly and bumped Vandelay Style, then shortly after was crowded by Nomorebourbons, which shifted out.

 

Canny Boy – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

Ausbred Bluebird – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Cupid’s Kiss – Raced keenly in the middle stages.

 

Calm Down – Rounding the home turn was bumped and taken wider by Avian Crescent.

 

Avian Crescent – Hung in under pressure in the home straight.

 

Vandelay Style – Hung in under pressure over the final 100m.

 

Piccinni – When caught wide and without cover in the early stages was allowed to stride forward by its rider to take up a position outside the leader, Vandelay Style, near the 1300m.

 

RACE 2:  Varley Group Conditional Benchmark 68 Handicap 1500m

Call Me Legend – Slow to begin.

 

Dom Tycoon – Shortly after the start was crowded between Unwavering Faith and Crazy Train, which shifted out.  Raced keenly in the early stages and near the 1000m was steadied to avoid the heels of Contributingfactor (Apprentice C Williams), which shifted in when not clear.  Apprentice Williams was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.  Rounding the home turn was bumped and carried wider by Crazy Train, which shifted out.

 

Rock The Bells – When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, M Bell stated that he was instructed to ride his mount conservatively from the outside barrier, as connections were concerned that if it were to work forward in the early stages it would be unable to finish its race off, particularly as it was racing first up on a heavy track.  He stated that, after beginning well, he immediately restrained his mount to comply with his instructions.  He said that when the tempo was moderate in the early stages his mount raced keenly and, when he was unable to restrain it sufficiently to obtain cover trailing Dalgarno, his mount was left racing wide and without cover throughout the event.  M Bell added that, whilst in hindsight the better option would have been to ride his mount positively in the early stages and race outside the leader, Sian, his actions in the early stages were in an attempt to comply with his instructions.  Trainer Mr M Freedman ….

 

Contributingfactor – When questioned regarding the gelding racing further forward, Apprentice C Williams stated that he was instructed to obtain a position midfield with cover, however, when caught wide and without cover in the early stages and when the tempo was moderate, he allowed his mount to stride forward and race outside the leader Sian near the 1000m.

RACE 3:  Newcastle Skin Check CG&E Maiden Handicap 1200m

BackrowerStewards permitted R Hutchings to ride the colt 0.5kg over its allotted weight of 56.5kg.  Slow to begin and then was shifted behind runners in the early stages from a wide barrier.

 

Silentdeel – The gelding was declared a late scratching at 12.38pm when it refused to be loaded into barriers.  The Stewards ruled that all monies invested on Silentdeel be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 12.38pm be subject to the following deductions in the face value of each ticket:

1st Backrower 0 cents win 2 cents place

2nd Huon 2 cents place

3rd Dirty Merchant 3 cents place

 

Trainer Mr A MacDonald was told the gelding would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

 

Sulmaher – Slow to begin.

 

Dirty Merchant – Slow to begin.

 

Al Ash Lad – Began awkwardly.  Raced wide and without cover until near the 800m and took up a position outside the leader, Huon.

 

Feirme Prince – Slow to begin (2L).  Overraced in the early stages.

 

Dishin ‘N’ Dancin – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.  Rider J Taylor pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m (four more than permitted under the rule).  J Taylor was fined $200.

 

Metallicity – Raced keenly in the early stages.  Rider M Bell stated that he was able to obtain a favourable position with cover, however, the colt did not let down as had been expected on today’s heavy track.

RACE 4:  Aaron Walter Century 21 Edgworth F&M Maiden Handicap 1200m

Artie’s Aviator – Trainer Ms A Neasham was fined $100 under LR35(2) for the late declaration of apprentice E Hennessy as the rider of the filly.  Slow to begin and then from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Sheer Elegance – Slow to begin.

 

Bonaventure – Slow to begin.

 

Jaameelati – Began awkwardly, then shortly after was bumped by The Halo.

 

Impressiero – Began awkwardly, then raced ungenerously in the early stages.  Approaching the 800m was checked from the heels of Flutist.

 

Princess Adelaide – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Really Serious – Raced keenly in the early stages.

 

Tomislava – Raced fiercely throughout the early and middle stages and refused to settle.

 

Flutist – Approaching the 800m hung in and away from Princess Adelaide and had to be checked from the heels of Newley Wed.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia.  Trainer Mr E Cummings was told a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an ECG, prior to Flutist barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

 

The Halo – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

 

Cunning Kitty – Held up rounding the home turn.

 

RACE 5:  My Money Sorted Benchmark 64 Handicap 900m

What Could Be – Began awkwardly, then shortly after the start was crowded between Zakor and Major Murphy, both of which shifted ground.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

Mr Polar – Slow to begin.

 

Patagonian – Bounded on jumping and lost ground.  Passing the 100m improved onto the heels of Virtuous Miss and was then held up and unable to be tested for the remainder of the race.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

Nosey – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Amazing Nicci – Laid out under pressure in the home straight and near the 50m was bumped and taken wider by Major Murphy, which shifted out and away from Virtuous Miss.

 

Major Murphy – Held up rounding the home turn and then on straightening made contact with Amazing Nicci when being shifted out to secure clear running.

 

In A Step – Approaching the 100m was bumped by One Penny, which shifted out.

 

Kennywyn – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

 

RACE 6:  Shed Boss Benchmark 64 Handicap 1870m

Chapal – Slow to begin (2L).  Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

 

Exolay – Slow to begin.

 

Anythink Goes – Inclined to lay in throughout the early and middle stages.

 

Choosday Nights – When questioned regarding the performance, rider W Costin stated that she was instructed to obtain a prominent position with cover, however, when Anythink Goes, which was positioned to her mount’s inside in the early stages, maintained its position one off the fence, she was obliged to continue forward to cross that runner and race outside the leader, Global Ausbred.  She stated after obtaining this position, her mount commenceded to pull hard, then continued to pull hard throughout the middle stages and, as a consequence, was unable to finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

Rockamo – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which was beaten 42 lengths, did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Ms A Bennett advised that in her opinion the gelding did not handle the heavy track conditions and she would look to avoid similar tracks in the future.  Ms Bennett was told that Rockamo would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being permitted to race again.

 

RACE 7:  The Mighty Hunter Valley Maiden Plate 1400m

Dupont – Stewards permitted R Hutchings to ride the colt 0.5kg over its allotted weight of 56.5kg.

 

Citric – Slow to begin.

 

Giancarlo – Slow to begin.

 

Miracle Spin – Slow to begin and was then shifted behind runners in the early stages from a wide barrier. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

 

Ausbred Yahoo – Began awkwardly and bumped Poppy’s Girl.

 

Ms Nefertiti – Slow to begin.  Overraced in the early stages.

 

Poppy’s Girl – On jumping was crowded between Miracle Spin and Ausbred Yahoo, which shifted out.  Raced four-wide and without cover throughout the event.  Near the 200m was bumped by Dubai Showgirl, which shifted out and away from Giancarlo.

 

All At Sea – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Count On Me – Raced keenly in the early stages and near the 1100m had to be checked from the heels of Miss Nefertiti.

 

Obelius – Pulled hard in the early stages.

 

Dubai Showgirl – Raced three-wide and without cover throughout the event.

 

Lumiere – Raced keenly in the early stages and was shifted behind runners from its wide barrier.

RACE 8:  Quarry Mining Benchmark 64 Handicap 1200m

Xpresso – Began awkwardly and bumped Ciao Uno.  When questioned regarding the performance, rider L Magorrian stated that his mount was unusually stirred up prior to the race and was fractious in the barriers.  He said, after beginning fairly, his mount was able to secure the lead in the early stages, however, it overraced and refused to settle, particularly when challenged by Shotgun Alli from the 800m.  He added that, as a consequence of his mount’s racing manners, it was unable to finish its race off.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover

 

Daichi – Began awkwardly and lost ground.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had bled from both nostrils.  As this was the first occasion, stable representative Mr C McCullough was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).

 

Flying Tyrol – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the race.

 

The Drake – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  Raced keenly in the early stages.

 

Hatsuko – Shortly after the start was bumped on two occasions by The Storm In Me.

 

RACE 9:  John Whitmore Memorial Benchmark 64 Handicap 1200m

Huriwai – Began awkwardly and bumped Tidal Impact.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

Sausalito – From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Miss Kingston – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

 

Patriot – Shortly after the start was hampered by Hit The Target, which shifted out.

 

The Denzel – Raced keenly in the lead throughout the early and middle stages.  Hung out under pressure over the final 200m and proved difficult to fully test.

 

Tidal Impact – Rider D McLellan reported that he was instructed to lead the race, however, when his mount began only fairly and a number of runners to his inside showed superior pace, he attempted to obtain cover behind the leaders.  He stated that when his mount commenced to overrace and he was unable to obtain cover, he allowed Tidal Impact to stride outside the leader, The Denzel, near the 800m, however it continued to overrace throughout the middle stages.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

 

GENERAL:

Rider L Magorrian pleaded guilty to a charge under AR218(4)(b) in that he was found to have a mobile phone in his possession whilst in the jockeys’ room.  L Magorrian was fined $500.

 

Summary of whip use:

Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR132(7)(a)(ii).  Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
