Near the 300m improved into a narrow run between Roshan and Highballer, which shifted out slightly resulting in Uncle Al Pal shifting out and away from that runner despite the efforts of its rider. As a consequence, Uncle Al Pal made heavy contact with Roshan on a number of occasions resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced. Buzz – Began awkwardly and lost ground (3L). When questioned, App. D. Gibbons stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding in a prominent position. He said that, in pre-race discussions, Trainer Mr C. Carmody advised that the gelding has a tendency to be slow to begin but his preference would be to allow Buzz to stride forward and obtain its customary prominent position. He added that, in hindsight, when Buzz began awkwardly and lost ground, the better option would have been to allow the gelding to settle towards the rear of the field where he would have avoided being caught racing wide and without cover throughout the event.

Cinque Torri – was fractious prior to the start being effected and, as a result, began awkwardly and lost ground. Shortly afterwards was crowded for room between Weekend Affair and Burning Need, which was taken out by Tongariro. Near the 1300m had to be eased when crowded for room between Tongariro and Weekend Affair, which shifted in. Cinque Torri then commenced to overrace for some distance thereafter. Cinque Torri lost its off-fore plate in the running.

Burning Need – Stewards permitted K. Latham to ride the mare 1 kilogram over its allotted weight of 55 kilograms. Shortly after the start was bumped by Tongariro, which shifted out.

Roseirro – was a late scratching at 5.46 p.m. acting on veterinary advice after the gelding became fractious, reared and became cast in the barriers for an extended period of time. Stewards ordered that all moneys invested on Roseirro be refunded in full and, with regard to betting with bookmakers, all successful wagers made prior to 5.46 p.m. be subject to the following deductions from the face value of each ticket:

1st Crystal Waters less 8 cents win, 10 cents place;
