Funstar firms into favouritism for Surround Stakes

Within three hours of acceptances on Wednesday the Waller trained Funstar had reversed the favourite status from Flit for the $500,000, Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) for three-year-old fillies at Randwick on Saturday.

Godolphin’s Flt had opened with TAB at $3.60 on Wednesday morning, however by early afternoon the filly had drifted out to $3.80 while Funstar had firmed from $4.00 into $3.40.

Flit, by Medaglia d’Oro, impressively won her opening race of this campaign in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on the 15th. Flit led home a Godolphin trifecta with Lyre second and Kiamichi third with Anthony Cummings’ Libertini fourth.

Funstar, by Adelaide, has not raced since winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick in October. The filly has had two trials with both seventh placings, the last over 900m at Randwick on February 6th.

The fillies are at opposite end of the barrier draw with Flit and Hugh Bowman in barrier seven and Funstar and James McDonald in barrier 14.

There were 14 acceptances for the Surround Stakes, Race 6 at 3.50pm on the nine race programme.

The track is rated a Good 4 on Wednesday after 12.2mm of rain over the last seven days. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit.

Sydney’s weather is forecast to have partly cloudy days with 25c on Thursday and Friday with no rain. Saturday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day with 19cc to 25c.
