Race 1 VALE VERRY ELLEEGANT - 2000 metres:

Mahamedeis Change of tactics: option to be ridden closer given the anticipated lack of speed in the event. Settled midfield.

Wil John Slow to begin.

Dunkel (NZ) Raced wide through the early stages before crossing to settle outside the leader near the 1400m.

Ashrun (FR) Restrained from the start. Rider Celine Gaudray stated that the gelding was resuming and she was instructed to settle where comfortable. Celine Gaudray explained that her mount was under pressure throughout and when the tempo quickened from the 800m, she agreed with the Stewards that she should have shown greater urgency to place her mount under pressure in order to position Ashrun (FR) closer to the balance of the field. Celine Gaudray added she was most pleased with the manner in which her mount finished the race off. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Mankayan (IRE) Approaching the 1400m was steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of Dunkel (NZ) (B. Egan) which shifted in when not fully clear. Rider Billy Egan was severely reprimanded.

Glentaneous (IRE) Rider Damian Lane reported that the gelding would appreciate contesting events of a greater distance than today's 2000m. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 2 SPORTSBET MAKE IT LOOK EASY HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

Kin Slow to begin. Held up from the 400m until shifting out to obtain clear running passing the 100m.

Von Hauke (NZ) Commenced awkwardly and lost ground. Overraced through the early stages.

Sessions Road Knuckled as the start was effected, unbalancing rider Jordan Childs.

Brereton Raced three wide without cover throughout. When under pressure passing the 150m was steadied when tightened for room between Midtown Boss (D. Stackhouse) which shifted in marginally and Kin (J. Kah) which shifted out to obtain clear running. Rider Daniel Stackhouse was notified to exercise more care. Rider Jamie Kah was reprimanded.

Hanchi Experienced some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the run to the finish.

Swiss Exile Rider Mark Zahra reported that the gelding laid out throughout.

Race 3 SPORTSBET ANGUS ARMANASCO STAKES - GROUP 2 - 1400 metres:

Autumn Angel Slow to begin. When questioned, rider Billy Egan reported the filly was beaten for speed through the early stages and settled back in the field. Approaching the 400m when held up, Billy Egan explained he shifted in passing the 400m to improve inside Pure Paradise, which had shifted out, where he was able to make up some ground and further in anticipation of a run presenting inside Rocking The Boat (NZ) which ultimately was taken in slightly near the 300m, resulting in Autumn Angel being held up, steadied off the heels of the weakening Rocking The Boat (NZ) and thereafter shifting wider to improve. Trainer Peter Moody confirmed the nature of the instructions, however agreed that the preferred option would have been to remain trailing Pure Paradise from the 400m which would have afforded Billy Egan a greater opportunity of obtaining clear running at an earlier point in the straight. Billy Egan was advised that in the opinion of the Stewards he had erred and should have remained trailing Pure Paradise from the 400m and looked to move wider rounding the home turn to secure clear running.

Pure Paradise Slow to begin before being hampered when tightened for room. Held up for clear running from the 400m until passing the 300m where it then raced in restricted room for a short distance.

Starlacca Eased from the start.

Rocking The Boat (NZ) Overraced through the early stages.

Serasana Raced three wide without cover throughout.

So Glamorous Laid in under pressure in the straight.

Sparkling Rider Ben Melham reported his mount slipped on jumping away and when placed under pressure did not feel entirely comfortable in its action. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 4 - SPORTSBET ZEDITAVE STAKES - GROUP 3 - 2000 metres:

Wolfy (NZ) Underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival and was passed suitable to race. Slow to begin. Raced keenly through the early stages. Made the home turn awkwardly and laid out.

Brave Mead Commenced awkwardly and lost ground. Rider Blake Shinn reported that as a consequence, the colt settled further back than intended.

Legacies Raced wide and without cover throughout.

Scheelite Held up for clear running from the 300m until the 150m. Over the latter stages was again held up when racing in restricted room between Maharba and Legacies and as a result was not able to be ridden out to the finish.

Don Corleone Held up from the 300m through to the finish and went to the line unable to be tested. Rider Mark Zahra reported that although his mount was held up for clear running in the straight, he felt the colt did not feel comfortable in its action over the concluding stages. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the right foreleg. Don Corleone was referred for further veterinary assessment. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.

Scully Held up from approaching the 200m before shifting out in order to obtain clear running near the 100m and brushed with Pivot City.

Race 5 STOW STORAGE AUTUMN CLASSIC - GROUP 2 - 1800 metres:

Immediacy (NZ) Near the 1400m when racing keenly was awkward on the heels of Dunbelievin'.

Caracas (NZ) Approaching the 1400m was checked to avoid the heels of Immediacy (NZ) which shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider, Luke Currie.

Dunbelievin' Approaching the 1400m was steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of Justaboom (J. Mott) which shifted in when not fully clear. Rider Jamie Mott was severely reprimanded.

United Kingdom (NZ) Rider Damian Lane could offer no explanation for the performance. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 6 CARLTON DRAUGHT PETER YOUNG STAKES - GROUP 2 - 1800 metres:

Correct weight was delayed to enable Billy Egan and trainer Danny O'Brien (Vow And Declare, 2nd placegetter) to view the Stewards' patrol footage of the concluding stages before deciding not to lodge an objection.

Foxy Cleopatra Raced keenly through the early stages. Approaching the 1400m when racing keenly was steadied off the heels of Campionessa  (NZ). Rider Blake Shinn reported that the mare raced too keenly and as a result failed to run on. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Rider Billy Egan (Vow And Declare) pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip 8 times prior to the 100m, which is 3 more than permitted. Billy Egan had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 8 race meetings (3 metropolitan, 5 provincial), with the period to commence on Sunday 3 March 2024 and expire on Saturday 9 March 2024. Accordingly, Billy Egan will be able to ride on Sunday 10 March 2024. Billy Egan was also fined $1500. In assessing penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, record, totality of whip strikes (17), that it was a staying race, a Group 2 event, the Victorian Penalty Guidelines and his mount placed 2nd.

Rider Michael Dee (Campionessa [NZ]) pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip 7 times prior to the 100m, which is 2 more than permitted. Accordingly, Michael Dee will be able to ride on Saturday 9 March 2024. Michael Dee was also fined $4500. In assessing penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, excellent record, totality of whip strikes (16), the Victorian Penalty Guidelines, that it was a Group 2 event and his mount won the race. Michael Dee also pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(i) in that he used his whip in three consecutive strides prior to the 100m. Michael Dee was fined $500.

Race 7 LAMARO'S HOTEL FUTURITY STAKES - GROUP 1 - 1400 metres:

Attrition Underwent a veterinary examination prior to the bandaging of an unhealed wound to the left fore pastern and was passed suitable to race. Raced wide through the early stages before crossing to obtain the lead inside the 1200m. Eased down over the final 100m. Rider Ben Melham reported that he was instructed, if his mount began well and given the perceived on-pace bias, to attempt to settle in a handy position with cover. Ben Melham explained after beginning well and when caught wide with no option to obtain cover, he elected to stride forward and cross to the rail. Ben Melham reported his mount did not feel entirely comfortable in its action and in his opinion may be best ridden with cover in the future. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Stewards will follow up with the stable.

Buffalo River (USA) Raced wide through the early stages before crossing to obtain the lead near the 900m.

Hey Fat Cat When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding which settled worse than midfield, rider Jordan Childs explained that the plan had been to ride the horse forward, however Hey Fat Cat began only fairly and did not muster natural speed, and when a favourable trailing position became available behind Mr Brightside (NZ), he allowed that gelding to cross and ultimately settled further back than intended.
