Adelaide training duo strike again in the Eclipse Stakes

Adelaide-trained Regalo Di Gaetano (by Supreme Class) scored another feature race win for South Australian-based trainers during the Melbourne Spring Carnival when landing the $200,000, Group 3, Keno Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield for Richard & Chantelle Jolly.

Trained out of Morphettville by the same father and daughter combination responsible for W.S. Cox Plate Day winner Dexelation, Regalo Di Gaetano completed a hat-trick of black-type wins when finishing best of the 10 runners under Zac Spain. The 6-year-old added the Group 3 event to consecutive successes in the Listed Murray Bridge Cup (1600m) and Listed John Letts Cup (1800m) at his previous two outings.

The finish of the 1800-metre contest saw the first six horses home finishing just over a length of each other. Bonvicini (by Myboycharlie (Ire)) ran home strongly over the closing stages — after being disappointed for a clear run in the straight — to claim second place, ahead of Starelle (by More Than Ready (USA)) in third. Royal Mile held on for fourth after receiving a relatively easy lead, while Our Playboy (fifth) and So Si Bon (sixth) were next home.

Speaking after his smart winning ride, Spain reported: “He was going to run in the Ballarat Cup but it was going to be too wet for him and they decided to hold off. They found the right race today.

“He’s just a winner. He knows where that winning post is even though he had a shy at it. He’s a lovely big, strong horse and put himself in a lovely spot. [He] Relaxed nice underneath me and he was never going to get beaten today.”

Spain added: “I knew that there was one horse [Bonvicini] coming and to his credit he dug deep. He’s a winner. You look at his form and it is three-in-a-row now.

“Credit to Richard and Chantelle [Jolly]. They do a great job in Adelaide and whenever they bring their horses to Melbourne, they’re competitive. I’m glad I could be on his back today.”

Regalo Di Gaetano was returned at $10.00, Bonvicini at $12.00, and Starelle at $7.00.

Winning time was 1m49.66s, and the official margins Long Neck x Half-Neck.
