RACE 1: Canterbury Park Handicap 1100m:
Stewards considered objections lodged by J Cassidy rider of fourth placegetter Lord Of The Spur against Coventry (C Brown) being declared the third placegetter and Homedge (G Schofield) being declared the second placegetter alleging interference on the home turn.

After considering the evidence Stewards found that making the home turn Coventry shifted out to improve to the outside of Cosmo King and in doing so crowded Lord Of The Spur out onto Homedge resulting in those runners making contact and Lord Of The Spur being badly crowded and becoming unbalanced, losing its running. Stewards dismissed the objection against Homedge when they determined the interference was caused by Coventry shifting out however upheld the objection against the third placegetter and amended the placings to read; Ricci Royal first Homedge second, Lord Of The Spur third and Coventry fourth.

At a subsequent inquiry C Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift out making the home turn resulting Lord Of The Spur being taken out and making contact with the hindquarter of Homedge and then rebounding off that runner and being checked losing its rightful running when making solid contact with the hindquarter of Coventry.

C Brown’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 15th April 2012 and to expire on Friday 27 April 2012, on which day he may ride.

Ricci Royal was slow to begin. Near the 450m Lord Of The Spur was steadied to
avoid the heels of Cosmo King (N Rawiller) which shifted in when not clear. N Rawiller was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. When questioned regarding the performance of Cosmo King N Rawiller stated that the gelding was agitated behind the barriers and then raced too keenly in the early stages which resulted in the gelding giving ground over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of Cosmo King revealed no abnormalities. Trainer representative Mr J Cummings agreed with the explanation of N Rawiller and undertook to report on the future plans for the gelding. The inquiry was adjourned pending the advice from the stable. A post race veterinary examination of Tigresa Rosa which was eased down in the straight revealed the filly had bled from both nostrils and in addition was displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr R Leemon was advised that prior to racing again Tigresa Rosa would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards and in addition he would be required to present a full veterinary clearance including results of an ECG and an endoscopic examination.

A short distance later Altar was bufferted between Kneeling and Ever The Same (J Cassidy) which shifted out to improve into a narrow run between Bound To Blush and Altar. Both R Thompson and J Cassidy were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Anise which was following and had been held up for clear running was steadied to avoid the heels of Kneeling and at the 100m was shifted to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running.

Zippy Zariz was held up rounding the home turn when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Two For Tea which was giving ground. When questioned regarding his riding of Words Gets Around making the home turn D Dunn stated that he had been mindful of not placing his mount into a tight run and although he was aware that run had commenced to develop making the home turn to the inside of Mr Edison he elected to hold up and not improve at that point as he was mindful that Zippy Zariz which was racing in advance of this position was held up at that point. He added that after briefly being held up in the early part of the straight he obtained a run to the inside of Zippy Zariz whereby his mount ran home strongly.

When questioned regarding his riding of Jellybean Jack from the 500m C Reith stated that after being held up on the back of Dragon’s Keep approaching the home turn he elected to shift to that runners outside in an endeavour to improve but after being steadied when disappointed for a run between O’dellini and Lucky Deluci he was obliged to shift back to the inside of Lucky Deluchi and did not obtain clear running until approaching the 150m.
