Overreach upstage in Randwick barrier trial
19 Aug 2013 | By Rob Burnet
The spring campaign for the 2013 Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Overreach may be reassessed after the filly was narrowly beaten by stablemate Marseille Roulette in a 1050m trial at Randwick on Monday morning.

Overreach under Tommy Berry lead the field of seven early before tiring and Marseille Roulette and Tim Clark overtaking her for a nose win.

Third was Savvy Nature (NZ) and James McDonald with the margin 1 1/2L. The time of the heat at 1.02.07 was the fastest of the 1050m heats.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse said she was disappointed by the run and was expecting more from Overreach and she will now reconsider the spring plans for the filly.

Overreach had an outstanding two-year-old campaign with three wins in succession at Rosehill including the Golden Slipper win over 1200m on April 6th and then a third behind Guelph in the Group 1 Sire Produce Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on April 13th before going for a spell.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel has been nominated for the $500,000, Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 16th and may resume in the $125,000, Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill on August 31.

Before the trial Overreach was the $4.80 favourite on Fixed Odds's market for the $1m, Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 14th, but later in the day the price had drifted out to $5.00.
