Golden Slipper awaits for Overreach
23 Mar 2013 | By Glenn Moore

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Overreach cemented her spot at the top of Golden Slipper betting with a dominant win in the $300,000 Group 2 Moet and Chandon Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Overreach came into Saturday’s race as a warm favourite for the world’s richest two-year-old race after streeting her rivals in the Listed Widden Stakes on return to racing; however Saturday was supposed to be a tougher challenge up against the Slipper second favourite Villa Verde.
Unfortunately, nobody told Overreach it was a tougher field as she over four lengths on Villa Verde in claiming victory.
Ridden by Tommy Berry, Overreach jumped brilliantly from the gates and was quick to take up the lead with Villa Verde (Bowman) sitting comfortably in second.
Little changed in the run until after the field rounded the turn; Overreach threw down the gauntlet but Villa Verde, first up from a spell, wasn’t up to the challenge.
Overreach was ridden out to the line, scoring by four and a quarter lengths to Villa Verde with a further length and three quarters to Spurrendous (Avdulla) in third. The overall time was 1.10.7 with the last 600m covered in 34.40.
“She left the punters that backed her today saying we have a very special filly,” Waterhouse said.
“She has done a treat, she has sweated up because it is a bit hot and humid but she relaxed beautifully.
“I am very lucky to have three chances in the Slipper and I don’t think there is much between the three of them but she will be the short priced favourite.”
“It is unbelievable,” Berry said. “She is so special, this filly.
“She set a nice genuine tempo in front. I didn’t want to go too slow because I don’t think that is to her advantage. I think her advantage is to sprint off a quick tempo and she did that.
“I still had to make her find the line because the last furlong she was star gazing a fair bit and I thought I heard something coming but when I looked back there was nothing there.
"She had a good blow and it surprised me how much of a blow she had when she pulled up but I think she is just a little bit new and no matter what I was going to make her find the line because there will be a lot more pressure in the Golden Slipper.”

The result saw Overreach firm into a very short $2.10 favourite with TAB.com.au Fixed Odds for the Golden Slipper with Villa Verde still a second favourite, but now at $11.

Overreach is by Exceed And Excel out of the Snippets mare Bahia and is owned by Corumbene Stud Pty Ltd (Mgr: G Altomonte), G Altomonte, Ms L N Smith & G Severino.
