A good time of the year for Kaypers
04 Aug 2012 | By Rob Burnet

Scone trainer Greg Bennett said that this time of year is for Kaypers, his now eight times winning Cape Cross gelding, and that the riches of racing in the spring might be too tough for him, but right now is certainly a very good time of the year.

Kaypers has reeled off  three city wins in succession after taking the $85,000, Canterbury BMW Your Inner West BMW Dealer Bm 85 Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury on Saturday with the last two under the upgraded stakes so he has taken home $97,500 for those wins alone.

Corey Brown rated Kaypers (54.5kg) to perfection overtaking the leader, and $3.50 favourite Queenian (55kg) and Tommy Berry, with 150m to run and then go away for a good 1 3/4L win.

Queenian (Dubleo) held second over Al’s Gold (54kg carried 52.5kg) (Al Jaasi) with the margin 1/2L. The time was 1.34.14 on the Good 3 track with the final 600m in 37.88. Kaypers paid $5.20 on NSW TAB.

“I think we went off a bit early with him last prep and came to town a bit too soon. Owners get a bit excited and I was getting excited too,” said Bennett.

“I always knew he had ability but to win three in town on the trot is great for me and the owners and the horse. He is honest and I have kept speed in his legs since Rosehill. I did not want to do a lot with him and you do not have to when they have had seven starts.

“Corey knows him backwards now and I said to him when I came out that we have a unanimous decision with the owners, and he said ‘what is that?’, and I said  we are not going to tell you what to do.

‘We just left it with him and he did a great job,” he said.

“The horse helped me out a little bit. He is quite strong and I was a little bit neutral coming out of the barriers as I did not want to get him racing from the wide gate and he took a couple of positions on me weaving his way through the pack,” said Brown.

“He is winning quite comfortably and he is still doing a few things wrong. He is still learning and on a bit of  delay taking a few seconds to take in what is going on. But he has done well this preparation,” he said.

Kaypers, out of the Zedative mare Miss Electra, has now won eight races from 18 starts and with three placings he has earned stakes of $194,040 for owners M & R Services Syndicate managed by M Mant and S and Mrs H Allison.

Big Bonanza (54kg carried 52.5kg) under apprentice Blake Spriggs did not live up to his name for punters in the last at Canterbury, the Canterbury BMW Customer Is Always Number 1 Bm 80 Handicap (1200m), paying $15.90 to defeat the punters elect Number One Club (59.5kg) and Nash Rawiller, the $2.20 favourite.
