Stamina influence for Sydney Cup may be the same as for Derby 21 Apr 2006
By Rob Burnet

The feature of the final day of the Australian Jockey Club’s Autumn Racing Carnival is the $800,000, Group I, Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m), and just as the first day of the four day carnival featured a Zabeel factor, the final day may have the same ingredient in the result of the race.

Last Saturday Headturner won the Group I David Jones AJC Australian Derby with the dam of the Anabaa gelding Monroe Magic being by the Cambridge Stud sire.

On Saturday there are two strong possibilities for the Sydney Cup with the same influence factors. Race favourite Fooram’s dam Sinjani is by the mighty sire of Zabeel, Sir Tristam, and Molotov’s dam Admit Anywhere is by Zabeel.

Jim Conlan, up once again on another raid in Sydney from his Cape Schanck base on the bottom of the Mornington Peninsula, has pushed for-year-old Molotov into the Sydney Cup of the back of wins in country Victoria and a fast closing second in the listed Neville Sellwood Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on April 8th.

Consequently Molotov, by Grand Lodge giving him further staying credentials, has a luxury weight of 52kg under Mark Zara who rode the horse in his country wins.

Molotov, however, has not covered the 3200m before so Conlan is relying on the Grand Lodge/Zabeel factor is supply enough stamina to last the distance.

Fooram, bred by Cambridge Stud and owned by a group of long time New Zealand racing enthusiasts, has also not covered the 3200m. However trainer John O’Shea has prepped this horse very well with two wins in succession.

Fooram won the listed Manion Cup over 2400m at Rosehill on April 1st, and then he followed that up with a win in the Group II, Chairman’s Handicap over 2600m at Randwick last Saturday.

The five-year-old is lightly raced with just 20 starts to-date, and, like Molotov, both his sire Maroof and dam should provide the staying ability for the longer distance. There is also the considerable assistance of Darren Beadman, who incidentally used the Zabeel assisted motor of Headturner in the Derby most effectively.

Fooram carries 53.5kg.

There are the other chances such as Three Chimneys, a five-year-old by Generous who won an English Derby, out of a Half Iced mare which will provide further stoutness, and who was 1 1/2L behind Fooram in the Chairman’s. Glen Boss rides trying to achieve Group I win number 10 for the season, carrying 53kg.

International jockey Kerrin McEvoy makes a guest appearance riding his father’s part-owned horse On A Jeune.  The five-year-old was second in the2005 Melbourne Cup, but has failed to flatter since. He carries 56.5kg.

The Randwick track is presently rated as a good (3) which will make for excellent racing once again. The rail is out nine meters from the 1600m to the finish line giving new ground for Saturday’s racing.
