The Allan Denham trained Mocambo recorded his second win in succession after taking the $50,000, TAB Rewards Handicap (1400m) for two-year-old's at Warwick Farm on Wednesday stepping up well from his maiden win at Kembla Grange on April 20th.
The Deep Field colt might have some maturing to do, but once he grows up he might well be capable of much more with his two wins suggesting raw talent earning his current victories that could be improved on with race craft and the filling out of his frame.
After making his debut over 1000m at Kembla Grange on April 6th for a 1L fifth he stepped up to 1400m on the 20th and won with 1 1/2L in hand after being seventh at the 400m
On Wednesday the colt raced in a similar manner with Corey Brown being patient from barrier 13.
Once they had turned for the run home Mocambo was third last and giving away some 5L. Brown guided him to the very outside of the 11 strong field and they set off after the leaders with Dorothy Of Oz and apprentice Robbie Dolan trying to lead all the way.
With clear running room Mocambo with 58kg really worked into his gears from the 300m, and by the 200m he was quickly making up the required margin. Over the final 20 metres Mocambo went past Dorothy Of Oz and then away to a 3/4L win.
Dorothy Of Oz (Redoute’s Choice) (carried 51kg) was 1 /4L ahead of Bacchus (Pierro) (53.5kg) and Kerrin McEvoy.
The time was 1.22.46 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 35.48. Mocambo paid $11.00 on fixed odds and $10.60 on the tote. The $4.20 favourite Saint Ambrose was eighth.
Mocambo, out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Lady Bligh, has earned stakes of $56,895 for owners Mr B Hudson, Mrs JA Hudson, Miss M Hudson and Miss C A Hudson.
