Three in succession for You Make Me Smile

Kathy O’Hara used You Make Me Smile’s fitness and modest weight allowance to perfection at Randwick on Saturday to win the $125,000, Lunar New Year Bm 88 Handicap (1300m) to make it three wins in succession for the Jason Coyle trained So You Think four-year-old gelding.

O’Hara took You Make Me Smile (54.5kg) to the front from the outset and that is where they stayed. The margin increased in the main straight and as much as the rest tried hard to bridge the gap, notably Diplomatico (54kg) and Brenton Avdulla, it was all too late.

The margin at the line was a decisive 1 3/4L to the $2.30 favourite Diplomatico (Snitzel) with Gauguin (NZ) (Dalghar) (54.5kg) and Glyn Schofield third, the margin 1 1/4L.

The time was 1.15.21 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 34.75. You Make Me Smile paid $5.50 on fixed odds and $6.00 on the tote.

“He has been flying this week, I worked him on the Course Proper on Tuesday and he was really in fine fettle. He is a happy horse and racing really well,” said O’Hara.

“His advantage today was he was not carrying a lot of weight and he was a fit horse, a lot of the other fancied runners were carrying a lot of weight and were soft into their preparations first up, so we were going to make it a test for them today and run them into the ground.

“He is a nice horse and I have always had a lot of time for him and he has started to put a few together now,” she said.

“It was dominant. We did a lot of work with him last preparation getting him to settle and that work has paid off  now. He can roll at those high cruising speeds very much within himself and it gives him the opportunity to clock that speed,” said Coyle.

You Make Me Smile, out of the Lion Heart mare Bianca Jewel, has now won six of his 14 starts and with a third placing earned stakes of $226,985 for owner Mr G Rapisarda.
