Stokes breaks leg, just like dad

Like father, like son.

Tommy Stokes unfortunately suffered a break to a shinbone at Morphettville on Monday morning, but as painful and uncomfortable as it was for the 20-year-old, his father Phillip could at least find a lighter side to a sticky moment for the family and his two-state stable.

Tom Stokes is due to undergo an operation later on Monday with the foreman of his father’s Morphettville stables doomed for many weeks in a cast and on crutches after a horse from another stable lashed out and kicked him.

It is a situation his father knows something about.

"Tommy’s having his 21st birthday in a couple of weeks and ironically when I had my 21st, I broke my leg too and was on crutches as well," Phillip Stokes said.

"I had a horse throw me in Alice Springs, of all places."

Stokes recently shifted the major part of his training operation to Pakenham in wake of the crisis that has hit South Australian racing.

The three-time Group 1-winning trainer decided to keep a yard in Adelaide, appointing Tommy as foreman for the 25-strong team.
