Race: 1 (319) AZALEA HANDICAP Class 4 1000 m
Whilst in the saddling stalls, CHAPARRAL STAR had its left front plate adjusted. CHAPARRAL STAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
On jumping, CHAPARRAL STAR and PEOPLE’S CHAMPION, which began awkwardly, were crowded for room between NOBLE DELIGHT and BEST RUNNER, both of which shifted ground.
BEAUT BEAUT shifted out at the start and bumped GOLDEN DASH.
RESPECT and DRAGON WARRIOR bumped at the start.
On jumping, REFINED TREASURE was crowded for room between RAY’S CALL and HOT HOT PEPPER.
Approaching the 600 Metres, when racing tight outside HOT HOT PEPPER, REFINED TREASURE got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in it being awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEAUT BEAUT.
Near the 400 Metres, RESPECT (M Chadwick) raced in restricted room between PEACE COMBINATION and BEAUT BEAUT (A Badel) which shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEST RUNNER. A Badel was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. M Chadwick stated that after being briefly crowded for room outside BEAUT BEAUT, RESPECT was then reluctant to maintain its position between that horse and PEACE COMBINATION.
K C Leung (PEOPLE’S CHAMPION) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in abruptly when not clear of RAY’S CALL, causing that horse to be unnecessarily hampered and to lose ground. K C Leung was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 13 January 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 18 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Jockey Leung was fined $25,000.
For some distance after the 400 Metres, BEAUT BEAUT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEST RUNNER which shifted out marginally when commencing to give ground. The performance of BEST RUNNER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEST RUNNER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After being awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOBLE DELIGHT passing the 300 Metres, REFINED TREASURE (K Teetan) was shifted in in an attempt to obtain clear running between NOBLE DELIGHT and HOT HOT PEPPER. When being shifted in, REFINED TREASURE made heavy contact with the hindquarters of HOT HOT PEPPER, resulting in both horses becoming badly unbalanced and REFINED TREASURE not being able to improve between HOT HOT PEPPER and NOBLE DELIGHT as sufficient running no longer existed. REFINED TREASURE was then badly held up for clear running behind NOBLE DELIGHT and outside HOT HOT PEPPER (U Rispoli) which then shifted out under pressure. Then passing the 200 Metres, REFINED TREASURE, which was continuing to race tight outside HOT HOT PEPPER, clipped the heels of NOBLE DELIGHT which at this time shifted in abruptly after initially being directed in by GOLDEN DASH (Z Purton) which, when laying in, shifted in marginally. This resulted in REFINED TREASURE blundering badly and losing a significant amount of ground. The Stewards were satisfied that REFINED TREASURE, after shifting in and making significant contact with the hindquarters of HOT HOT PEPPER, had not established running between that horse and NOBLE DELIGHT prior to HOT HOT PEPPER shifting ground. However, U Rispoli was advised that after becoming unbalanced due to contact from REFINED TREASURE which shifted out, he should have made more of an effort to prevent his mount from shifting out than he did. He was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to be more aware of his mounts shifting ground and to make every endeavour to prevent them from shifting ground. Z Purton was advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that GOLDEN DASH, which was having its first race start today, was shifting in and proving difficult to ride, he was reprimanded and told that he must make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. K Teetan was also told to ensure that there is sufficient room to improve between runners so as to avoid making unnecessary contact.
A veterinary inspection of NOBLE DELIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of REFINED TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
REFINED TREASURE, GOLDEN DASH and PEACE COMBINATION were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (320) CINERARIA HANDICAP Class 5 1800 m
DOUBLE POINT shifted in at the start and bumped CELESTIAL ARROW.
FIVE STARS AGENT began awkwardly and then despite being ridden along was slow to muster speed.
After initially being ridden along from a wide barrier, BEST EFFORT was steadied to obtain cover.
After initially being ridden along from a wide barrier, FURIOUS PEGASUS was steadied approaching the winning post on the first occasion to obtain cover after racing wide.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, JIMSON THE FAMOUS failed to muster speed and near the 1200 Metres was left racing wide and without cover.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, RHODE ASSASSIN was inconvenienced when racing tight between FIVE STARS AGENT and CELESTIAL ARROW.
Passing the 1500 Metres, CELESTIAL ARROW got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SEMPITERNAL.
Passing the 250 Metres, EQUITY DOCTRINE and FIVE STARS AGENT briefly raced in restricted room between RHODE ASSASSIN which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SWEET BEAN and GENTLEMEN which got its head on the side and shifted out under pressure. CELESTIAL ARROW, which was following, was shifted out away from the heels of FIVE STARS AGENT in consequence.
After the race, RHODE ASSASSIN was found to have shifted its right front plate and FURIOUS PEGASUS was displaying signs of "thumps”.
After the race, K C Leung (WINNINGLI) reported that his mount did not travel well at any stage on today’s track surface. A veterinary inspection of WINNINGLI immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a small wound over the left hind cannon.
Also after the race, O Doleuze stated that he was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of EQUITY DOCTRINE. He said he did make a recommendation to connections after the race that they consider giving the horse a brief let-up as EQUITY DOCTRINE raced "flat” today. A veterinary inspection of EQUITY DOCTRINE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SEMPITERNAL and FURIOUS PEGASUS were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (321) FIRE-CRACKER VINE HANDICAP Class 4 1650 m
Just prior to the start being effected, ENDEARING became fractious and reared. In this incident, J Moreira’s whip broke.
TELECOM MAN was slow to begin.
From wide barriers, IMPERIAL CONCORDE and PLAY IT were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After being ridden along to obtain a forward position in the early stages, MULTIGOGO was left racing wide and without cover after the 1300 Metres and subsequently gave ground in the Straight.
After the 900 Metres, PLAY IT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TELECOM MAN.
Making the turn near the 700 Metres, TELECOM MAN raced tight between PLAY IT and GREAT JOY.
Passing the 700 Metres and again at the 600 Metres, GRAN MASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ENDEARING.
Near the 450 Metres, GRAN MASTER and ENDEARING raced tight as GRAN MASTER improved between ENDEARING and CHATER THUNDER. After being brushed by GRAN MASTER, ENDEARING got its head on the side and lay out for a short distance.
ELUSIVE STATE was unable to obtain clear running until after the 300 Metres.
Passing the 150 Metres, QUICK RETURN was shifted out away from the heels of ENDEARING to continue improving.
Passing the 50 Metres, QUICK RETURN was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ENDEARING which shifted out under pressure.
QUICK RETURN, CHATER THUNDER and GRAN MASTER were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (322) HEATHER HANDICAP Class 3 1600 m
HOME RUN began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped RIGHTEOUS MATE which also shifted in.
After the 1000 Metres, LET US WIN was left racing wide and without cover.
Near the 350 Metres, LET US WIN shifted in and bumped MCQUEEN which became unbalanced.
When questioned, K C Leung stated that he was asked to ride SUCH A HAPPINESS in a midfield position with cover if possible from the outside barrier. He said it was anticipated that the race would not be run at a good tempo and it would therefore be detrimental to SUCH A HAPPINESS’ chances were the horse to get too far back in the early stages. He said after beginning positively on SUCH A HAPPINESS, he steadied the horse in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover, however, due to the field being compact as a result of the slow early tempo, SUCH A HAPPINESS was left racing wide and without cover and therefore, to prevent having to cover unnecessary ground, he allowed SUCH A HAPPINESS to stride forward to race outside the lead approaching the 1000 Metres.
After the race, N Rawiller reported that HOME RUN shortened stride noticeably after the 200 Metres which prompted him to ease the horse down over the concluding stages when out of contention. A veterinary inspection of HOME RUN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, HOME RUN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GONNA RUN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MORETHANLUCKY and CALCULATION were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (323) THE PO LEUNG KUK CENTENARY CUP (HANDICAP) Class 4 1400 m
Whilst in the saddling stalls, ROCKET GO had its left hind plate refitted. ROCKET GO was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
ROCKET GO and WINASWEWISH were slow to begin.
Shortly after the start, NEVER BETTER and CITY LEGEND bumped heavily as a result of both horses shifting ground. NEVER BETTER then became further unbalanced when buffeted between CITY LEGEND which shifted in when unbalanced and GOOD FOR YOU which shifted out marginally.
After travelling about 100 Metres, ELITE POWER (C Y Ho) commenced to prove very difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of runners in advance for a considerable distance. After the race, C Y Ho stated that his mount took charge at this time, resulting in him not being able to properly control it. When ELITE POWER proved very difficult to settle, that horse shifted in and hampered ROOKIE STAR after the 1300 Metres when being checked away from the heels of COMPASSION STAR and then near the 900 Metres shifted out away from the heels of NOBLE STEED and made contact with CITY LEGEND, causing that horse to become badly unbalanced and taken wider and without cover. GOOD FOR YOU, which was following CITY LEGEND and also proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence. After this, CITY LEGEND was allowed to improve its position, however, continued to race wide and without cover. The racing manners of ELITE POWER were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ELITE POWER will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial around a bend.
Passing the 1100 Metres, COMPASSION STAR improved of its own accord to be racing inside the heels of UNIQUE JOYFUL which at this time shifted out after being crossed by HAPPY WARRIOR. Then, when the tempo of the race slackened, COMPASSION STAR proved very difficult to settle when being steadied to resume its position behind UNIQUE JOYFUL. When proving very difficult to settle, COMPASSION STAR shifted in away from the heels of UNIQUE JOYFUL, resulting in LUCKY TIME becoming unbalanced when crowded for room. After taking evidence from Z Purton (COMPASSION STAR), M L Yeung (UNIQUE JOYFUL) and T Berry (HAPPY WARRIOR), the Stewards found that COMPASSION STAR’s racing manners had contributed to this incident by improving inside the heels of UNIQUE JOYFUL despite the efforts of its rider to remain racing in the position behind that horse. Nonetheless, T Berry was advised that at this stage he had reduced the tempo and was warned against the practice of steadying the pace of races such that other horses and riders are not able to adapt to the change in tempo.
Near the 850 Metres, UNIQUE JOYFUL got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of HAPPY WARRIOR.
NOBLE STEED travelled wide and without cover until near the 700 Metres.
UNIQUE JOYFUL had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
For some distance in the early part of the Straight, HAPPY WARRIOR and CITY LEGEND raced tight, resulting in both horses making contact on a number of occasions. Passing the 200 Metres, CITY LEGEND, which haws commencing to give ground, was steadied when racing tight between UNIQUE JOYFUL which was racing tight inside COMPASSION STAR and HAPPY WARRIOR which was taken out marginally by TRAVEL EMPEROR.
Passing the 50 Metres, NOBLE STEED was bumped on the hindquarters by TRAVEL EMPEROR which, after improving into tight running between that horse and CARE FREE PRINCE, was then taken out marginally by CARE FREE PRINCE.
Close to the finishing line, HAPPY WARRIOR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOBLE STEED.
LUCKY TIME was not able to obtain clear running at any stage in the Straight and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that ROOKIE STAR had sustained a minor wound to the right hind pastern and NOBLE STEED had sustained minor wounds above the left hock and the right hind cannon.
A veterinary inspection of CITY LEGEND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
NOBLE STEED, COMPASSION STAR and TRAVEL EMPEROR were sent for sampling.

MIGHTY BOY and PROUD SKY bumped at the start.
From a wide barrier, GARLIC YEAH was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, MIDNITE PROMISE was unable to maintain momentum and then after the 1700 Metres was steadied to obtain cover when racing very wide.
In the Straight, AEROLUMINANCE lay in under pressure.
Throughout the race, STAR OF HONG KONG travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
The performances of STAR OF HONG KONG and PENZANCE, which finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, STAR OF HONG KONG and PENZANCE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, A Badel stated that at its most recent start GOOD DAYS, which was wearing blinkers for the first time, was reluctant to race in amongst horses and did not travel well until shifted to the outside of runners. He said in today’s race, after initially obtaining a position one horse off the rail behind PENZANCE, GOOD DAYS came off the bridle after the 1200 Metres which required him to ride his mount along for some distance in an endeavour to remain racing close behind PENZANCE. He said having regard to the manner in which GOOD DAYS was travelling and the way it had travelled last start when amongst horses, he elected to shift GOOD DAYS out from behind PENZANCE after the 1000 Metres to see whether GOOD DAYS would travel better. He added although this resulted in the horse having to race three wide and without cover, he believed that remaining racing behind PENZANCE would be to the detriment of GOOD DAYS given its reluctance to maintain its position behind that horse.
M Chadwick (HAR HAR HEART) stated that at its most recent start he had been instructed to ride the horse in about 4th or 5th position with cover and after being slow to begin, the horse got back further in the race than had been intended, however, was able to be successful. He said he was asked to ride the horse in a similar manner today in about 4th or 5th position with cover, however, due to the circumstances of the race in the early stages, he was obliged to be more forward to avoid racing wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of HAR HAR HEART immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GARLIC YEAH and MIDNITE PROMISE were sent for sampling.

Race: 7 (325) THE BAUHINIA SPRINT TROPHY (HANDICAP) Group Three 1000 m

Passing the 300 Metres, M Chadwick (MAGIC LEGEND) dropped his left rein.
K Teetan was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in after passing the winning post which resulted in FABULOUS ONE being hampered.
After the race, K C Leung (ARCHIPPUS) stated that after beginning well his mount was left racing without cover in the early stages and would not settle. He said because of this ARCHIPPUS was then not able to finish off its race. A veterinary inspection of ARCHIPPUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
HOUSE OF FUN, PREMIERE and FABULOUS ONE were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (326) THE PEARCE MEMORIAL CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) Class 3 1200 m

Passing the 400 Metres, MICKEY RICH was bumped by GOLDEN HARVEST (K C Leung) which shifted out to obtain clear running. K C Leung was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
N Rawiller (EVERBRAVE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent EVERBRAVE from shifting out which resulted in that horse shifting out across the rightful running of DOUBLE VALENTINE which was checked. In this incident, SIR REDALOT was bumped on the hindquarters by DOUBLE VALENTINE, became unbalanced and shifted out, causing SHANGHAI MASTER to be crowded onto the hindquarters of VICTORY MACHINE which also became unbalanced. N Rawiller was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 13 January 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 18 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Jockey Rawiller was fined $25,000.

Near the 450 Metres, NUCLEAR POWER was brushed on the hindquarters by DIAMOND DRAGON which shifted out, causing both horses to become momentarily unbalanced.
PING HAI STAR had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
J Moreira (PING HAI STAR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 250 Metres he directed his mount in when not clear of MIGHTY MAVERICK, causing that horse to be crowded for room and unnecessarily hampered. J Moreira was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 13 January 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 18 January 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). After being placed in the barriers, the hood applied to RIVET was replaced.
Also after being placed in the barriers, CIRCUIT GLORY became fractious and got its front legs over the front gates. CIRCUIT GLORY was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said, after the necessary consultations, it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, CIRCUIT GLORY will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
RIVET began only fairly.
HAPPY AGILITY began awkwardly.
DRAGON LIPS and LUCKY GIRL were crowded for room on jumping between SOLAR HEI HEI and KEEN VENTURE which shifted out.
TIME TO CELEBRATE began only fairly and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between SPEEDY LONGWAH and RISE HIGH which was taken out by BIG BANG BONG. In this incident, SPEEDY LONGWAH became unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by TIME TO CELEBRATE. TIME TO CELEBRATE was then shifted across behind runners.
From the outside barriers, SPEEDY LONGWAH and DOCTOR GEOFF were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1400 Metres, CIRCUIT GLORY got its head up and travelled keenly when being steadied to obtain cover behind DRAGON LIPS. CIRCUIT GLORY was then briefly crowded for room near the 1250 Metres when racing tight inside DRAGON LIPS which was racing tight inside BIG BANG BONG.
CIRCUIT GLORY lay out rounding the Home Turn.
After the 300 Metres, DOCTOR GEOFF commenced to lay out under pressure and then approaching the 200 Metres shifted out abruptly. After being straightened, DOCTOR GEOFF again shifted out abruptly passing the 150 Metres and continued to hang out to the outside rail. The racing manners of DOCTOR GEOFF were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DOCTOR GEOFF will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.

Passing the 150 Metres, RIVET raced tight inside KEEN VENTURE.
Throughout the race, HANG’S DECISION travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, Z Purton stated that he had not been given any specific instructions as to how to ride RISE HIGH. He said however connections of the horse had been disappointed that RISE HIGH had been slow to begin in a number of its races and had consequently not been able to obtain a forward position. He said he rode the horse in a barrier trial prior to its most recent start over 1600 Metres at Sha Tin and on that occasion the horse had trialed well when ridden in the lead. He said RISE HIGH began satisfactorily today and he therefore felt that the opportunity existed for the horse to take up a forward position rather than being steadied from the wide barrier which would have resulted in it having to again race back in the field. He said he had to commence to ride RISE HIGH earlier in the race than he wanted to as the horse was laying out rounding the Home Turn and he attempted to have it rail better. He added nonetheless RISE HIGH was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to finish off the race when ridden in a forward position. A veterinary inspection of RISE HIGH immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of DRAGON LIPS and HAPPY AGILITY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
TIME TO CELEBRATE and KEEN VENTURE were sent for sampling.
