Race 1: 2019 Membership Sprint 1100m:

Roheryn - Stewards today concluded an inquiry into J Parr's handling of the colt having regard to his riding in the early and middle stages of the event. Stewards expressed concern with J Parr's handling in that in the middle stages Roheryn lost touch with the leading division of the race. When questioned on the day rider J Parr stated his instructions were from its wide draw to ride the colt where comfortable, but the stable had anticipated Roheryn would settle towards the rear of the field, similar to the manner in which it was ridden at its previous start. He added that in the early stages he was positioned to the outside and behind Beidi and whilst he had contemplated maintaining a position to that runners outside, he elected to allow Roheryn to settle behind Beidi when G Schofield rider of Beidi elected to maintain a one-off line. He said the decision to do so was to avoid racing three wide and without cover. He further stated that throughout the early and middle stages of the race he had formed the view that the tempo of the event was fast and that his mount as a result never travelled comfortably and was racing at its top throughout the early and middle stages of the event. He said for this reason he was reluctant to place Roheryn under pressure to endeavour to make up ground on the leading division as in his view this would be detrimental to the colts' chances. J Parr added that from inside the 600m he commenced to urge his mount along whilst still racing behind Beidi and that on straightening he placed the colt under full pressure whereby it commenced to improve into the event. J Parr further added that whilst placing his mount under full pressure he had expected, with the fast tempo, that the leaders would commence to give ground but when they did not Roheryn found it difficult to make up sufficient ground on the winner Chess Star. J Parr was further question in respect to his contact with his riding agent regarding today's race. Stewards examined J Parr's phone to ascertain what communication he had with his riding agent leading up to today's race. Trainer Mr J Cummings confirmed the nature of his instructions and advised that he expected Roheryn to take up a rearward position. He stated that he concurred with the view of J Parr in that Roheryn was unsuited by the fast early tempo and expressed general satisfaction with J Parr's handling of the colt from the 800m as he was of the view the colt was racing at its top during that section of the race and it would not have been in the colt's best interest to place under pressure at that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. After considering the evidence the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Today further evidence was taken from J Parr, Mr Cummings and Mr J Walter, rider agent for jockey J Parr. A report from Racing NSW Betting Analyst Mr M Reid was also tendered. In respect to the betting available to the Stewards, the Stewards found there was no suspicious activity and were satisfied that persons who had supported the winner Chess Star had bet within their normal parameters and that there was no association with jockey J Parr. Mr Walter gave evidence that his tipping and form service Racingwatch had selected Chess Star purely based upon the expected price of that horse having regard to the expected short price of Roheryn. He advised that whilst he had communicated with J Parr the evening before the race there had been no discussion with J Parr in respect to how he would ride Roheryn in this race. Having considered all of the evidence Stewards made the following findings

1. That J Parr's actions in the early stages to settle behind Beidi were reasonable as this resulted in Roheryn obtaining cover and not being caught three wide without cover when the tempo of the event was strong.

2. That his riding of Roheryn between the 900m and 700m in the circumstances was reasonable given Roheryn did not appear to be travelling well and was having difficulty with the strong-early pace.

3. His riding in the straight was not in question as he had placed Roheryn under pressure at the appropriate time to ensure his mount finished the race off. This was confirmed by the final 600m of the event run by Roheryn of 32.35.

4. Stewards found that J Parr's riding of Roheryn between the 700m and the 600m was not reasonable given he was positioned some 10 lengths behind the leader Chess Star and in those circumstances, he should have shifted to the outside of Beidi near the 700m and placed his mount under pressure from that point.

After considering all of the evidence which included the beaten margin of 2.3 lengths between Chess Star and Roheryn Stewards advised J Parr they could not be comfortably satisfied had he placed Roheryn under pressure from the 700m that he would have finished in advance of that runner. On that basis Stewards elected not to issue a charge against J Parr under AR135(b) however he was advised he must ensure that he rides his mounts in an endeavour to provide with the best opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field and he must be mindful of the position of his horse in relation to the leaders in an event.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be 2/5 lame in the off foreleg. Stable representative Miss L Wadsworth advised that Ronstar had pleased the stable leading into today's race and had displayed no lameness. Miss Wadsworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the geldings next race start. Miss Wadsworth advised consideration would now be given to spelling Ronstar.

Beidi – When questioned rider G Schofield confirmed his instructions were to be more forward today and said from his wide barrier Beidi did not show sufficient early pace to take up a prominent position. He added as a result he elected, from his wide barrier, to shift behind runners to obtain cover. When commencing to finish the race off reasonably well Beidi was steadied near the 50m when disappointed for a run between Reelem in Ruby and Baller (T Berry) which shifted out. T Berry was advised to exercise more care.

She said that when Only Choice held its position to her inside, she was left racing four wide and without cover. She further stated in her opinion the mare was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off as it was under pressure from as far out as the 600m.

Blue Collar Boy – After being slow to begin, shifted out and made contact with Bridyn May. Leaving the 600m was checked when crowded between Only Choice and Vega De Lago (App R Dolan) which shifted out whilst inclined to hang out. App R Dolan was reprimanded under AR137(a). In Issuing a reprimand Stewards found R Dolan had made an attempt to prevent his mount from shifting out but for a short distance near the 600m had relaxed on his mount which resulted in it shifting ground at that point.

He said that near the 600m when taken wider Sir Bacchus commenced to race ungenerously. He added that soon after entering the straight when placed under pressure his mount was disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding. S Weatherley stated this may have been due to the gelding racing second up after a strong first up performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

He further added that in the middle stages when positioned behind Lisdoonvarna he was reluctant to ride his mount along to maintain that position and this resulted in Dunatun being able to establish running in advance of him resulting in Conarchie being shuffled back in the field. He added on straightening he was disappointed for clear running to the outside of Dunatun and was obliged to shift to that runners inside at the 300m where he secured clear running.
