Ride of the day from King

Rachel King produced the ride of the day at Randwick on Saturday when she guided Godolphin’s Deprive from last to win the $125,000, EML Handicap (1100m).

After leaving from barrier 11 King settled Deprive (53kg) back to last as they field sped across the High Street straight and then she eased him across to the middle of the track, but still last, as the field spread for the turn into the main straight.

Passing the 300m the gaps were not opening for King and Deprive and punters who had taken the $2.20 of the favourite would have become more than anxious with their investment not looking likely to produce the desired outcome. Up front Heart Conquered (54kg) and Dwayne Dunn had taken the lead and left the rest behind.

King though had a plan. Before the 200m she took Deprive back towards in the inside where no winners had raced throughout the programme. The gaps opened and King had Deprive scorching through and suddenly they were alongside Heart Conquered.

Dunn tried to ask Heart Conquered to another gear and the three-year-old tried, but inside Deprive was past at the 50m and away for a long neck win.

Heart Conquered (Akeed Mofeed)and Dunn were well clear of Noble Joey (Shellscrape) (52kg) and Winona Costin in third, the margin 2 3/4L. Spending To Win was fourth.

The time was 1.02.29 on the upgraded Good 3 track with the final 600m in 34.13.

King declared afterwards that she was not worried at the top of the straight, a feeling that might not have been shared, but she was certainly cool in her decision making heading back inwards for racing room.

Deprive is a four-year-old gelding by Denman out of the Canny Lad mare Defrock. This was his first race since December, which was a win in a Benchmark 78 over 1200m, and he carried on the form for his fifth win overall from eight starts. With two placings he has earned stakes of $283,030.
