RACE 1:  Harrolds Victory Vein Plate 1000m

Speedycom – the colt, which was fractious in the barriers, began only fairly and shortly after the start shifted out abruptly and made contact with the hindquarter of Zoushack.  Rider T Berry reported that the colt hung out throughout the early and middle stages and then made the home turn wider as a consequence.  He said making the turn his saddle shifted, placing him at further disadvantage and not being able to test the colt in the straight.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.  Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised Speedycom would now be spelled.  Notwithstanding Mr Bott was advised the colt must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to being permitted to race again.

Zoushack – began awkwardly and shortly after the start was bumped by Speedycom.  In the early stages was bumped on a number of occasions by Speedycom, which was inclined to shift out.  Leaving the 600m, when Speedycom continued to shift out, had to be steadied from the heels of that runner and was then shifted in to obtain a position closer to the rail.  A short distance later Zoushack then commenced to race keenly and had to be checked to avoid the heels of Vendeval.  When commencing to finish the race off inside the 100m shifted in and away from Deviate, resulting in K McEvoy having to stop riding and straighten for a number of strides.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be 3/5 lame in the near-fore leg and had a laceration above the left eye.  Stable representative Mr D O'Meachair was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Zoushack racing again.

Valour Elite - hampered on jumping by Zoushack, which shifted out.  On the home turn was taken wider when Zoushack shifted out.

Mesmer – began only fairly and then shortly after the start shifted out away from Ready's Girl and as a result was eased when awkwardly positioned close to the heels of Vendeval.  Rider J Parr reported that the gelding hung out on the home turn and as a result became awkward on the heels of Valour Elite leaving the 500m.  He said from this point he did not fully test Mesmer when it was in an uncompetitive position.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Newnham advised Mesmer would now be spelled.  Notwithstanding Mr Newnham was advised the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to being permitted to race again

Vendeval – on straightening was inconvenienced when taken wider by Ready's Girl (J Collett), which shifted out to improve.  J Collett was advised to exercise more care.

Disruptor – in the early part of the straight was held up for clear running and could not be fully tested until near the 200m.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have a speedy cut to the near-hind coronet.

RACE 2:  TAB Highway Handicap 1400m

Ave – Stewards permitted E Webster-Hawes to ride the mare 1 kilogram above its declared weight of 53 kilograms.  Slow to begin.  Near the 300m was steadied when disappointed for clear running to the inside of Bart.  Ave was then shifted to the outside of that runner where it secured clear running at the 250m.

Mediterranean – after being slow to begin was crowded shortly after the start between Lawan and Tristan De Angel, which shifted in.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils.  As this was the second time the gelding has bled, trainer Mr M Dunn was advised under the provisions of (AR53A). Mediterranean would not be permitted to race again in Australia.

Lawan – bumped with Mediterranean on jumping and became unbalanced.  Raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 600m had to be steadied away from the heels of Bart.  Ave, which was following, was steadied as a consequence.  Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and was then shifted to the outside of runners where it secured clear running at the 250m.

Saxton Rock – overraced throughout the early and middle stages.  In the early part of the straight raced in restricted room to the inside of O'Driscoll, which was inclined to shift in slightly.  Saxton Rock then near the 200m was bumped by O'Driscoll when that runner shifted in, resulting in Saxton Rock being awkwardly placed close to the heels of Manangatang and Lips 'N' Lashes, which was commencing to give ground, having to be steadied when crowded.

Arugula – overraced throughout the early and middle stages.  Approaching the 600m was steadied away from the heels of Saxton Rock.  Near the 200m was inconvenienced when Velaro (T Clark) shifted in.  T Clark was advised to exercise more care.  When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, B Looker stated that, after being held up for clear running, he observed a run commence to develop between My Blue Jeans and Velaro, which in his opinion was tight.  He said when he was of the view that Velaro was inclined to shift ground he was reluctant to proceed into the position and as a consequence remained held up until near the 200m.  He added that from this point Arugula was then shifted to the outside of Velaro, whereby it secured clear running at the 150m and finished the race off reasonably well.  Stewards advised B Looker that, given his relative experience, he would be expected in similar circumstances to endeavour to obtain runs when they present to ensure his mounts are given full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field.  In taking no action against B Looker, Stewards were satisfied that his reason not to improve between My Blue Jeans and Velaro was somewhat validated when Velaro did shift in near the 200m.

Lips 'N' Lashes – approaching the 300m was steadied when disappointed for clear running to the inside of Manangatang.  When questioned regarding the performance, rider R King stated that, after being disappointed for a run at the 300m and being crowded at the 200m, Lips 'N' Lashes lost all momentum and on today's heavy track then was not able to finish the race off.

My Blue Jeans – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.  M Bell (Magestic Pedrille) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that inside the 100m he permitted his mount to shift in whilst riding along, resulting in Velaro being crowded and then continuing to allow his mount to shift in, resulting in My Blue Jeans having to be checked.  M Bell's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 21 October 2018 and to expire on Sunday, 28 October 2018, on which day he may ride.  Rider J Collett advised his intention was to take up an off pace position on the gelding.  He said My Blue Jeans commenced well today and without being pressured was able to take up a position outside the lead.

RACE 4:  The Star Mile 1600m

All Too Huiying – rider R King stated she had expected to go forward and possibly lead on the horse, but on jumping her mount commenced awkwardly and lost ground.  She said soon after the start she was then positioned tight to the inside of Kaonic and despite her efforts to go forward All Too Huiying did not respond to her urgings and as a consequence she was obliged to settle back in the field.  She added that in the straight All Too Huiying was one-paced and in her opinion would be much better suited racing in its usual racing pattern on the pace.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
