Qafila beats colts in SA Derby

Qafila broke a 35-year drought for the Lindsay Park operation when she beat the colts in the Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville on Saturday.

The sole filly in the field enjoyed a soft run as a $14 chance on the pace and then shot clear turning for home, managing to hold out Savvy Oak ($26) by three-and-a-half lengthsm with the favourite Mr Quickie ($2.50) running home late from the back of the field for third just ahead of Chapada ($5).

It has been only four years since a filly - Delicacy - won the race but you have to go back to 1984 when Lindsay Park last took the event, when the late Colin Hayes saddled the filly Mapperley Heights to a famous victory.

Qafila, who is raced by Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Stud Australasia, was ridden by Cory Parish, who added a second Group 1 victory to his breakthrough one of 18 months ago when he rode $51 chance Boom Time to victory in the Caulfield Cup.
