Henry’s Affair has won the second running of the $75,000, The Sportsbet Hotham (1200m), Victoria's richest maiden, at Ballarat on Friday.
At his 29th attempt, the five-year-old Henrythenavigator gelding, carrying 57kg under apprentice Chelsea MacFarlane, came through the field to claim a head victory for Swan Hill trainer Nathan Hobson who trained the last placegetter with Sathern in the 2017 Sportsbet Hotham.
All The Wire (58.5kg) was second with Mental As Anything (56.5kg) third, the margin a short head. They time was 1.12.30 on the Good 4 track.
Hobson found Henry’s Affair on the internet. A loyal group of owners, including several from Sathern’s ownership, spent $3,000 to secure their 2018 runner.
“Great feeling winning this year after we ran last last year. We’d only had the horse for a month and hadn’t put a foot wrong in all its prep. Might have to reinvest the winnings into another horse for next year!” said trainer Nathan Hobson.
Prior to the race Hobson said “The race is such a great concept, we made a point of looking for a horse to target the race this year,’’
“Sathern was a lovely horse, but one of the slowest I’ve trained, so we’re hoping Henry (Henry’s Affair) can do much better for us this time.’’
Henry’s Affair did that after being $41 at the start of the week, $12 at the start of the day and finishing on $9.00 and he was only the sixth best supported runner.
“What a spectacular finish to the Hotham, Henry came through the pack and snatched it at the post. It’s a great story for trainer Nathan Hobson who targeted winning the race and the result will go a long way to changing his future,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Will Byrne.
